I feel that Z scale is neglected. Thus, I dug out pix from various compact Z scale layouts for inspiration. I start with a multi-level layout under construction which is measuring 82 x 50 cm, which is meant to fit into an IKEA bookcase. And I conclude the presentation of my research results with the work of a gentleman who is into modules. These are about the German Nahe valley. All buildings are custom made based on actual prototypes. Source (with more pix): http://www.railroad24.de...ilder/bilder.php?id=6605Alsterstreek attached the following image(s): |

Ak,
They're all great. Don't get so inspired to slip down a couple of scales, even if M made more US RR liveries in Z... That last one gives me some ideas for my mine.

Hard to believe, but according to the information available, the pix show standard 3'x3' Z-Bend model train modules in 1/220 scale. A "vertical approach"... Source: http://hotwirefoamfactor.../modeling_frederickl.htmAlsterstreek attached the following image(s): |

Must be some serious Helixes going on underneath, otherwise separate tracks. 'Cause the little z locos don't go uphill all that well. I keep mine to max 1%. Thanks for posting these layouts. They are giving me ideas for expansion. I wonder where they get all the models or are they scratch built? Cheers, Wal

From memory the scenic portion was a couple of feet wide, maybe 2'6".

"Donner Pass" - US themed layout inspired by the prototype in California on a 155 x 32 picture frame - by Guenther Garn, Elchingen, Germany. Itinerary: From the return loop and attached Roseville shadow station the mainline climbs up and exits tunnel 4, crosses Cascade Creek and reaches Norden station. There tracks split at the covered turntable where helpers are turned. All turnouts are covered, too. Track 1 follows the first transcontinental line into tunnel 6, while track 2 with a passing siding leads to the new tunnel 41. Both tunnel portals actually conceal the upper return loop. Track plan attached. Edited by user 31 January 2015 21:49:54(UTC)

Looks like the good ole Noch 43950 Castle Lichtenstein No, I don't have any in stock and it has been discontinued going on 6 years now. Wish Noch would bring it back for z scale. :( |

Tried to document the schematic track plan. Seems to be a very long five-level (labeled levels 0 to 4 on the attached) continuous loop on a 4 x 4 ft surface. Level 0 - and partially level 1- is following the course of the meandering river while the higher levels are crossing the gorges on high bridges and trestles at angles and traversing the central mountain ridge via cuts or tunnels. Indeed fascinating. Alsterstreek attached the following image(s): |

Western Pacific Railroad Museum Z gauge layout. The surface area of this walk-around design seems to be 4 x 8 ft with rounded corners. The layout consists of four different sections separated by viewblocks. Thus, a running train seems to traverse different landscapes with city terminal and Sierra at the ends and hill country and desert sections in-between.
