Hi all,

My existing "Matterhorn Layout" has provided me with great pleasure during the last 2 years.ThumpUp ThumpUp
But I am contemplating the construction of a new layout commencing during my holidays in January.

I am in the mood for running some trains with longer consists behind, like the ICE2 and DB103 and DB111 and DB01-097 each with several coaches behind, or Freight with lots of box-cars or coal hoppers, etc. I want trains of 1.5 meters in length to have space to ease around the layout, and stop at signals with braking modules.

There is some space is along the side of the garage wall, where I have a reasonable length, but which needs a removable end-piece. Why ? So that the cars can drive into the garage, access to the lawn-mower, bicycles, wind-surfers, etc, all of which also live in the garage. Of course !

So I am planning to make a detachable module with a reversing loop which I can easily attach to extend the layout when I am running the trains, and remove when the lawn mower and bicycles have their moments. You will see the idea in the pictures below :

Here are some thoughts which I am working on at the moment.

Single ascent / descent line around the right hand side, so trains will need to reverse loop on the top and the bottom, as well as circuits on top level and bottom level. Signals at all locations where stations / platforms can go. Narrow angle points for slim line train switches. Something like this :

Comments welcome.Smile

Many thanks to SCARM (Mixy) for allowing me to dream about layouts in my sleep, and then test them out on the computer before construction !

Regards,BigGrin

Hi John,

Many possibilities to run long trains and park them on the sidings. What are the dimensions of this planned layout part and the removable layout part? I would also like to have longer sidings and straight track sections, but I'm really limited to my train rooms small size. If I will ever build a layout again (my current layout is a long project... Wink ) I will make sure there will be longer sidings, straight track sections and reversing loops in both directions.

Have fun with building your new layout. Maybe a good idea to have some kind of wheels under that removable layout section? RollEyes

Cheers,

Hi all,

Finally getting going on the new Matterhorn Layout. BigGrin BigGrin
(This will be Matterhorn III, following on from Matterhorn I which was Analog, and Matterhorn II which was Digital).

My good friend Terry came to assist me with the woodwork during the past couple of weekends, and I managed to lay out some track. It's always exciting to see how the track plan develops, and I have been adjusting my SCARM drawings as I think of new things.

There will be lots of signalling systems here .. I haven't yet planned all of the signals, but there will be enough signals for train traffic to stop and go all over the layout, operated by Contact Track sections, and probably my first venture into Occupation Detection.

Andreas,

Yes, the "Matterhorn" was made for my first Matterhorn I, but I used it again on Matterhorn II and shall be using it again on Matterhorn III.

Regarding the windsurfer board, yes, I have been a windsurfer fanatic since the early 1980s, and I still windsurf every summer. I have 2 windsurfer boards, the yellow F2 (Fun & Function) used for wave-riding conditions, and the white Mistral used for flat water conditions.

During this summer, we have had extreme windy conditions (that's good for sailors !) , and on one day I achieved a long aspired ambition of mine to windsurf across Table Bay. And so it was that on a particular day in January the weather conditions were perfect, so I set off to sail across Table Bay. Wind speed about 25 knots south-easter wind , swell size about 2 meters, water chilly on west coast, but nice sunny day.

These selfie pictures were taken on my return, and I have arrowed the point of land on the far side of the bay to where I sailed, and back.

Magnificent backdrop of Table Mountain in the background. One of the world's premier windsurfing and kitesurfing locations.Cool Cool

Hi all,

I have been running some trains on my new layout to test out everything before I commence with scenics and electronics.

I modifed the track layout with some curved turnouts so that you can switch from any track to any other track at the junction before the station area. You can see the multiple stacked curved turnouts in the photograph.

I also like the reversing loop out on the end which allows me to use R4 and R3 curves on the reversing upper level. My friend Terry helped me to add an extra 30cm in length and breadth to my original base board, you know, for that extra turning space. The lower level reversing loop is also fun to see the train disappearing and then re-appearing again from the same place.

It is for us a long weekend here, because Monday is a holiday, so I am hoping for some more progress on the layout.

Hi all,

Time to update my story ...

I have been working quite hard on my layout recently, first of all just running trains to see whether everything worked ok, and then to start building the scenery.

In the scenery building stage, I have removed all of the track, then done the painting, and now I am placing the track back into position.

My friend Terry especially cut the curved station platform area, using the R1 & R2 on the inside, and R3 & R4 on the outer side. I really think he has done a good job !!

My Matterhorn Mountain from my previous layouts has remained with me for this new layout.

I hope you enjoy the latest pictures ......Cool Cool Cool

Chris,

Thanks for your nice comments on the curved station platforms. I have to admit two things : 1) they were made by my friend Terry in exchange for some work which I did on his layout, and 2) they look great !!! Using the curves R1 & R2 on the inner, and R3 &R4 on the outer.

Yes, layout will have lots of automation , including :

2 x s88 inputs, with 32 input triggers connected to 20 contact tracks strategically placed around the layout
10 x k83 with 40 output mechanisms, including 10 signals, 24 turnouts, uncouplers, etc
signals and braking deals of 1.2meters at each platform, for realistic braking into the platform and trains stopping at the end of the platforms
distant signals changing with use of "occupation detection" at various places.
CS1 control connected to 6021
various lighting systems in houses (lights flashing, disco lights in one house, platform clocks, etc)

I can't wait !!

John

Hi John. I don't know how I managed to miss your thread? Nice going! Yes, it really looks like a super fun layout. I assume you'll have a plan for your

signals? I just got a few of the new ones but I am a bit disappointed in that they will not work with the contact track sections with the MS2 or in analog

mode. I was told by Märklin the contact sections will only work with the CS2? Anyway, they are quite nice. I will be looking forward to your progress, John.

Hi all,

Wiring jungle - not for the faint hearted !
All under control actually !

I decided to create an electronic board with all of my k83's linked together.
Also home made braking delays all linked together.
Useful 6 strand cables going out to pairs of turnouts, signals, etc

Has turned out to be a very easy wiring approach, all done on the workbench in the sitting upright position, before positioning in the current place.
Avoiding the upside down stuff !

Hi all,

My friends Joe and Terry and James popped in today to see what was happening on the layout.
So we ran a few trains and tested out some track running.
All went well, I am delighted to report.

There is still further work on the wiring and the s88 controls, so everything coming along smoothly.

Hello all,

I have been making very good progress !

All of the wiring is connected and operating well. I have 2 x s88 inputs connected to 32 'flipper tracks' around the layout. The CS1 feeds these signals to the k83s and switched turnouts and signals on the layout. There are 10 signals with Braking Delays and about 20 turnouts.

I figures that everything works well enough for me to finish off the track ballasting and to decorate the layout with some more trees. Preisers and lights still to be added.

So here are some pictures from today :

Hi all,

The good news is ... I have been running lots of trains !
Especially older trains, older cargoes, older wagons.
Do you remember these wagons and carriages ?
They all run well on the layout !

I have been running seven trains on my layout, using CS1 automation.
4 trains in block formation, one behind the other, traversing upper level and lower leves.
2 trains on the upper level including the reversing loop twice around.
1 train on the lower level making a double-reversing loop and ending up where it started.

I am learning how to make a video using my phone device, and I shall post it shortly here.
Some pictures from this morning :

Peter,

Thanks for watching the video.
I hope you enjoyed the automated signal controls !

It's actually my "F800" featured in the video and in the picture above, but same loco chassis/body to 3048.
In fact, I have digitized all of the locos in the video.
All together, I have digitized about 35 locos myself, and only 2 of my locos came with digital decoders which I have not modified.

Hi all,

Joe and Terry came to visit my layout over the past weekend.BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin

We were running the trains using automated control, and glad to say, everything seemed to work well.
When visitors come to the layout, then I run some of my favourite locos : ICE2, Croc 3356 (14305), BR50, BR53, BR01, etc.

Joe took some pictures to record our fun :

John,

Looks like a lot of fun! What's the size of your layout?

I see an E94 in the grass, glad I'm not the only one offroading locomotives :)

Brandon,

The layout measures 2.6m x 1.5m in the area visible in the photos below.

In addition, there is a reversing loop in the lower left hand side of the picture, which measures 1.2m x 0.8m. There are two levels in the reverse loop for the upper and the lower levels, as per the picture below, and connected via a single line back to the main track area.

(PS This area is not yet finished !)

It is a lot of fun already !
There are plenty of reversing loops on both levels, and so I am running seven trains in automated mode.

In manual mode, I hope to run 3-4 trains easily, with a little help from the signaling system. Every signal has a switch track to switch the signal to RED after a train has passed, so that no train should catch up with another.Cool Cool

Hi John. I just watched your video again. Just super, especially with those breaking modules which allow the Lok sounds to remain on.

You did a terrific job there and your wife must feel right at home looking at the Matterhorn. Cheers,Peter ThumpUp ThumpUp Smile

Hi all,

I have been having fun with some more automation on my new layout.Cool Cool Cool

In this video, you can see three trains running.
The trains consist of several wagons each, and the idea is that the trains go past each other at the station.
All locos digitized by myself, and all of these trains and wagons come out of 70's/80's catalogue.

I hope you enjoy the video !
A few shakes here and there, but still ok to watch !

Hi all,

I would be interested if you could help me date the E94 locomotives in the video above.

The DB version (with the black wheel guards) came in a box labeled 3322 and it says "Made in Western Germany" on the box and also underneath the drive wheels on the chassis.

The DR version (with the red wheel guards) had no box when I purchased it, but it says "Made in Germany" underneath the drive wheels on the chassis.

As far as I know, the division between East Germany and West Germany began in August 1961 when the Wall divided the city of Berlin, and ended in October 1989 when the Wall was broken. I presume that Goppingen was always in West Germany even though it was outside of the Wall of Berlin, so where actually was the dividing line between East and West Germany ?

Hi John,

I have both of them. I bought them as second hand locos.

The "254 153-0" is Marklin 3335, but I don't know when it has been built. Mine is marked "Made in Western Germany" underneath the drive wheels.

Cheers
Fabrice
