My opinion after studying the model 1. Weak headlight lighting. 2. The look of the pantograph and roof line connection is too much metallic. 3. SAB-wheels detailed design for poorly performed. |

I have been up there (Kiruna) in winter and my guess is that the Marklin guy, who went up to get the details for the loco was so cold that he could not see properly because one of his eyelids was stuck to the eyeball, and his hands could not draw properly because he was shaking too much and the ink froze in the pen.. Needless to say that the battery life the camera is very short in that climate too - so no pictures.. In any case, after 20 minutes of standing still the loco would be covered in snow up to the bottom of the driver's door (so he had no idea what the wheels looked like).. So when he got back to the warm office in Germany, he had little choice but to make up the details - "Es ist nur ein Spielzeug!", he mutters as he applies the frostbite cream with his one good hand. He could have saved a trip by watching this video on YouTube |

I saw the 37753 briefly in one shop in the Stockholm area the other day and the shop from where I've ordered my 37753 hopefully gets delivery this coming week. If so and if nobody else has received and taken photos of their model before me, then I'll try to do it when I get mine. I saw the model in Göppingen in Märklin's stand at IMA and during the factory tour there were lots of Dm bodies to be seen in various stages of pre-painting preparation. (NB. The end sections are called Dm and only the middle section is officially called Dm3). I didn't see any Dm3 during the factory tour. This could mean two or three things, either the Dm3 have already been produced, the Dm3s will be produced later or the model bodies I saw were not Dm, instead they we Norwegian NSB El 12. The concern I had (and have) is that the models on display at IMA had very noticeable gaps between the imitated harmonica connections between engine parts, but there was no way to determine whether the models on display were pre-series version or production models.

The October Märklin wallpaper download is the standard model.... I hope it is an early prototype model that is depicted in the photo... I would not let that photo pass, since I would be embarrassed about it if I was the quality control manager... SAB wheels look like molten plastic..
Closest buffer is bent downwards...
Ventilator plastic part needs a slight shaving towards the back of the front loco, and is not snug enough towards the brown body...
The rods are Piko 80's plastic looking....
I am trying to see positive things since I'm very Märklin-biased, but these things bother me a lot since it's supposed to be a promotional picture.... Webmaster attached the following image(s): |

Hi all! Here are the promised pcitures! The first thing that happened was that I got an error message from my CS2 and had to delete the loco and load it in again. The loco is ok and the motors are not very noisy. But I hear a click-noise bit that´s propably something to do with the rod or the pick-up shoe. If you notice the box and the loco it´s they differ a little bit. There´s less space between the 3 locomotive parts and the pick-up shoe is on loco 1201. It seems like Märklin has done some corrections since they showed the model the first time. Less space between the loco parts and also correct red tail light. But there are some parts that would need corrections. The headlights are really weak as some have pointed out. That´s quite disappointing and I could see Märklin recalling all units just for that cause. It´s hard to see in normal daylight if the head lights are on or not. Even worse when you turn on the half-light function. It´s almost the same when turning on the driver´s cabin lights. But the lights in the machine room are much brighter. Also the locos runs pretty slow on the highest speedsteps compared to alot of the "average" locos. However, the motors seem strong and runs smoothly and the sounds are fine. |

Hello Friends, here the pics of the loco, and some comparision with the Roco model. The lights of the model that I've photographed are very low, you can see them only in the absolute dark. The sound is a standard electric noise, not exactly as the original (Roco loksound), but I think it's upgradable. Some things are improvable, as the chrome electric cable on the roof, and there aren't additional detail to have a realistic front of the loco (snowplow closed, realistic hook etc.) But it is a good metal model. clic on the pic |

Matt Era 3 DB lokos, coaches and freight cars from across Europe But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control. With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397. |

beautiful Images, Alberto I was a little curious why the headlight lenses have burrs on all three, is that exclusive Märklin quality this days I'm not so convinced that this model will be a best Sellers, so let us hope that Märklin become influenced by our opinion to next release It’s always interesting to see the pricing by eBay when this bidding start for €1. You can buy the 37753 model thru German dealers for €425 but in Sweden most dealers like to sell it for €538 |

Actually, I am quite impressed with the Marklin model, it has come a long way from the prototype version. A big improvement would be to paint the pantographs dark grey, like the Roco version. The front light lenses are disappointing, but hopefully easy to correct, but most un-Marklin like. Poor attention to detail. For the money, I would prefer one of the new Crocs, but it is a model I would consider in the future. Edited by user 08 October 2013 08:10:13(UTC)

For the money, I would prefer one of the new Crocs, but it is a model I would consider in the future. In terms of impression with german in my country is serious, well - disciplined, dedicating on details. Many prestigous brands from Germany get the huge success and trust to people on global like Mercedes Benz, Siemens, Leica..... but the appreciated features seem not to be on Marklin when comparing to other MRR manufacturers. Marklin always makes the details a bit worse than Roco and far worse sound effect than ESU and always can be found out something wrong on models. Marklin seems always cannot do a model perfect and satisfied with customers at a time.

Hi Juhan
This thread has long ago been hijacked and has very little to do with Marklin model 37755. Why don't you rename it to reflect the model being discussed here, being 37753.

These loks were designed to pull heavy iron ore trains from Kiruna (iron ore mines in Sweden) to Narvik the Northenmost ice free harbor in Norway. It never gets closed by ice pack thanks to the Gulfstream influence, while places furethr North like Tromso and Kirkenes have often restricted access in the winter season. ) All this happens north of the Arctic circle Here's a (small)start for the loco http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SJ_Dm3If you google "railway kiruna narvik" you'll have a lot of info, videos and pictures On google map, search for "Kiruna" and "Narvik" and follow the railroad line. Do not hesitate to click on "streetview"... I visited the place (Narvik) by boat many many years ago, after cruising the Lofoten Islands and venturing deep into Ofjot Fjord, then took the train to Kiruna. When you see that place and the whole RR line with the giant trains, you will definitely understand the fascination people have with these models! Bon Voyage! |

I surely agree with Jacques Vuye that these iron ore trains are impressive and I would surely recommend anybody here to go up there and take a trip on a passenger train from Kiruna to Narvik. I would also recommend doing it in the summer for instance in June, because then there are fewer mosquitoes (compared to in July or early August) and you can go for a hike and enjoy the midnight sun. Perhaps Adrain (xxup) doesn't agree with me and would suggest December. I've been a couple of times there and gone by train, by car and by plane - it is about 95 minutes flying time from Stockholm Arlanda airport to Kiruna and about 16 hours by night train (sleeper och or couchette coaches) from Stockholm C to Kiruna C. The train between Kiruna and Narvik takes between 3 and 3 1/2 hour, depending on time of day. If you are into downhill skiing then the season often lasts to midsummer and you can then go skiing in the midnight sun at Riksgränsen. The Iron Ore line goes through relatively untouched wilderness - from Kiruna to the Norwegian border and to Narvik. (The road from Kiruna to Narvik was built as recently as 1980 to 1984). A map of the railway line from Luleå via Kiruna to Narvik in Norway: A slightly more detailed map is found here: http://www.trafikverket.se/PageFiles/2707/malmbanan_webbkarta.gifIn winter temperatures along the line can easily go down to -35 to -40 C and this puts extra stress on the equipment since even steel becomes more brittle at cold temperatures. At such temperatures there is very little humidity in the air, but when going down towards Narvik located, as Jaques points out, at a natural ice free harbour, the humidity from the open water increases and having wagons and loads that are still perhaps at -30 to -35 puts an extra challenge on the mechanisms for unloading the wagons, since the humidity in the air condensates on the cold surfaces and freezes. More about the line can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Ore_LineA line profile (originally published by SJ in 1906 - 50 years of Swedish railways): http://www.historiskt.nu/normalsp/staten/malmbanan/staten/malmb_profil.htmlNote that the upper scale shown on the profile is a length scale and he lower an altitude scale in km and m respectively. The line was first in Sweden to be converted to electric operation in 1915 and this means that in 2015 there will be a centennial to celebrate. Perhaps that would be a suitable year for going there!

A week ago I was in Stockholm and met Dieter Lorenz from Märklin in Stockholm. We talked quite a bit. Propably because we spoke in german and not everyone in Swedden speaks german. I asked him about the Dm3 and got some replies. The reply for the weak headlights were that they were simulating the weaker headlights they had at that time when they had weaker lamps. He couldn´t say anything about future models but I´ve suggested X2000 (SJ and Amtrak-version). He did reveal that the Dm3 must sell otherwise it will be hard to motivate any new Swedish models. To be more on topic again (technically the 37753 should be similar to the 37755). I opened my Dm3 up today to see how the LED's are connected. At first it looked like a black PCB with small white things (the LEDs) on it. Very clean. But on the track with the functions enabled you see what happens. There are 3 LED´s on each side for the machine room lighting. Thera are also 4 different LED´s in the front of the PCB (one red for the tail light and one LED for the 3rd headlight on the upper side and one LED for the 2 lower lights and one LED for the cabin lighting mounted under the PCB). I could only open the end units and I could find the speaker and the MFx-decoder in the front unit. It´s strange it´s not in the middle unit. I also noted some strange behaviours. When using the dimmer and Zoom functions on the CS2 for the headlights, some LEDs lights up for a short moment before turning off. The manual doesn´t state how to use the pantographs, but there´s a electrical connection in the front unit that you could change so you get power from the pantographs instead. Here are some pictures of how it looks like inside. There are 10 LEDs in each front unit and propably 6 inside the middle unit=26 LEDs in the train!! Unit 1201. The speaker, the MFx decoder and one of the motors. Unit 1201. From above you can see the connector for the pantograph (haven´t tested it) in the middle of the PCB and note the 2 small LED´s to the most right on the PCB at the red cable. Unit 1202. Here the machine room lighting, the red tail light and the cabin lighting is activated. Unit 1202. I´ve highlighted the light diffusors with a flashlight. In the upper left there´s one for the 3rd headlight, and to the right of it is the red taillight. The copper plate is for the pantograph. Unit 1202. Note that this PCB is quite empty. There are only connections for the motor and the 10 LEDs in the unit. |

Not much snow and no Northern Lights (not even Southern ones!) I can vouch for the train from Stockholm to Kiruna. You get a very good sleep and there is plenty of hot water in the shower, but it was nice to take a return flight. We did not go to Narvik on that trip, but we did travel around on snow mobiles at -35C to see the northern lights somewhere north of Kiruna. Something very special and I am sure it will stay with me all the way to the Sunny Farm Nursing Home. Old hat stuff to you northern hemisphere people, but it was a very new and fantastic experience for us Aussies. Lots of very friendly Swedes in Kiruna too. We did see the ore trains from our hotel window, as their pantographs sparked along the overhead lines, but we were unfortunately unable to get onto a mine tour. Maybe next time. Hello Adrian, With respect, I am at friendly variance with your annotations about snow and southern lights in Australia, In Hobart we have snow settle on the ground from time to time (See attached) and most certainly see the "Southern Lights" (Aurora Australis) regularly (see below and also : http://www.australiangeo...ng-the-southern-lights/)Regards, PJ

I'm impressed by your southern lights, but the snow in those pictures is a poor imitation of the real Scandinavian stuff. Hobart is about the same distance from the equator as Bordeaux in Southern France. Kiruna is about the same distance from the equator as the edge of Antarctica. The other thing about Scandinavia is that all the member countries make Christmas time beautiful. The lights and the snow make a fairy-like land. The picture below, from our trip, shows the path to the Viking Ship museum in Bygdøy near Olso in Norway. Here is a picture of the Kiruna mine taken at midday. The train line is at the mid-right of the picture and the sun is behind the mountain. |

Hello Adrian, Yes we don't get snow like that here!! Looks like you had a magic trip. Did it inspire you to model any snow scenes on your layout? Mind you, I would be interested to see snow in Bordeaux! :- Regards, PJ http://www.holiday-weather.com/bordeaux/
