Dear Marklin Z scalers,

I am new to Z scale. I have just purchased a starter set on eBay and a few extra wagons and extra track to get started. I have a large N scale layout but have always wanted a bit of Z scale . The seller assures me the loco (DB 89 steam tank engine, 5 pole version) runs very nicely but I always like to know how to service model trains. Can someone point me to any on line diagrams, service sheets, pictures or photos of what’s inside this loco? So far I have found the two shown below.

It looks a lot like the Minitrix Dock Tank Engine with its vertically placed motor, only about 2/3 the size.

Many thanks,

Hi Grahame,

Welcome to the forum.

The sheets you are looking for, can be found on the Märklin - server. The links must be copied and pasted in a new window. Märklin does not allow direct linking.

For the new version:

Manual:

The older exploded view could be also of interest, it is more detailed:

Regards

Markus

Hi Grahame and welcome to this forum, and to the World of Z!

The link you found in your second post is as good as it gets. The Z scale Br 89 is a simple piece of kit.

So just to confirm the black down arrow shown below is a lubrication point for the motor shaft, yes?

That's correct.

I did mean to say before that the little diesel shunters (8864, 88641, 8865) are basically the same, so if you wanted to diversify your loco fleet your workshop wouldn't have to learn a whole new lot of stuff.

I just found this excellent video on the 8864, same chassis as the DB 89, yes?

Strip down for 8864

Grahame,

I have a starter set with the same loco, if I don t forget, I ll put up the manual tomorrow. Also, if that s a picture of your loco, it seems to have a 3 pole motor, not the 5 pole motor you are talking about...

Hello Grahame,

I have looked up the manual, and made a picture about the relevant page. I still hope it s of some use.

Also you asked for pictures of the loco itself, what do you exactly want? I have the loco with the 3 pole motor, but it s technically the same for the rest. Also, the v60 shunters (8864) are slightly different, the wormwheel is located diffently. The br89 is a easier one to rebuild, but the video still contains some good tips...
