Hello All! Need some ideas on improving traction on my Marklin Z Steam Locos. I'm having some problems with a slight incline in my layout (Noch "Cortina") and would like to hear from some of you who have the same issues and how you solve them. I have heard of a product called "Bullfrog Snot", however, I believe that it is used for N and HO scale locos. I have a 8827 Class 41 Steam Freight Loco and a 88991 Class 38 Steam Passenger Loco. I also realize that weight is an issue since my diesels have no problem with the incline.

Any advice would be helpful!

Thanks...

Rich

Hi Rich and welcome to this forum. Let me start by saying what a great choice you have made in your steam locos!

You may have thought of this already, but are the wheels and track clean? If they aren't, that could make a difference. I have tried Bullfrog Snot myself and wasn't overly impressed with the results. How many coaches/wagons are your 41 and 38 pulling up the grades?

Hi Rich,

I think cleaning is the better option, as Gary said. I wouldn't personally use Bullfrog Snot (great name!) as Z scale is a bit too delicate, anyway.

Thanks for the response! I'm using Rokuhan track and it is fairly new. I will try cleaning it and see what happens. On the passenger loco, I'm pulling 3 DB 86 local coaches (8753,8754, & 8755). The freight, 5-6 mixed beer cars, etc...

You're obviously not trying to pull trains that are too long. Any idea of the grade of the slight incline? Anything over 2-3% can be a problem, especially with lighter locos. Are the loco wheels clean?

Hello Rich!

This website below had some advices about that. I liked that one of adding weight into the locomotives... In the other hand, I really don't liked the idea to glue something into the wheels...

Also, you can go to the home page. They have a lot of good information about Z Scale.

I builded a Z layout based on Noch Kaiserstuhl plan, and resolved the same problem just decreasing the angles of tracks...

Meanwhile...

Reading again the tips&tricks from zscale.org, I remembered that I setup my 8832 Union Pacific A-B-A set with the "Improving Marklin Multi-Unit Wiring" instructions.

http://www.zscale.org/articles/unitwiring.html

Now, my locomotive have 4 sources of wheel power, instead of only 2 from the original way.

Regards,

Walter
