Hi how do i go about converting this Roco DC loco into an AC one. My thinking is to put an MFX decoder into it and run it of the wires. But will it still go round the Marklin K track and go through the tight radius points with the DC wheels.

Hi Dan,all,
You'll need a place to put the pick-up shoe and run a wire to that(decoder),then wire the wheel pick-ups to the ground.

Hi Dan,

there are spareparts for this loco suitable for 3 rail (pickupshoe) however what you will encounter DC locos sometimes have both bogies poweres whereas AC models have one bogy powered or 2 bogies powered but leave one axle unpowered for the provision of a pick up shoe.

to convert your DC loco to an AC loco you have 2 options:

a.) get the bogy parts so it can accomodate a slider
b.) or run it from the pantographs

there is little work you have to do take the housing off and follow the wires. DC locos have isolated axles all you have to do is combine the wires (4 of them) but make sure they are connected to the right soldering pad (track connection - slider connection) or ( - + ).

most Roco locos have an 8 pin socket and I would suggest to get an ESU decoder (V4 M4) with an 8 pin plug which is equal to an MFX decoder.

I have not found an AC version of this loco and it would take someone else to find out if an AC bogy was produced for this type of loco

I'll keep searching

good luck

John

Hi John,all,

>to convert your DC loco to an AC loco you have 2 options:

I don't know about Roco but Piko uses the same frame/boogies in their DC models that they also produce in AC.Make two different boggies, madness,I say.Still if they do a drill and self tapping screw can secure it.Solder a wire for it to the decoder.

>there is little work you have to do take the housing off and follow the wires. DC locos have isolated axles all you have to do is combine the wires (4 of them) but make sure they are connected to the right soldering pad (track connection - slider connection) or ( - + ).<

Yep,follow the wires from the wheel 'wipers'.

Hi Dan,all,

>So you don't need a sliderConfused<

Well,I had a girlfriend once,...LOL

Dan,you need to tell us more about your set-up and how you plan to run trains. If your E-loks(Roco or even M) are going to get power(+) from the overhead/catenary,that is fine. The wheels(even on a DC loks) can serve as the return (-)
Your other loks(steam/diesel) will have to run from the track.

Dan,

its a petty you only ordered 1 of these iron ladies because I like to get one to but they are still very expensive.

John.

P.S.

running l;ocos from the overhead system is no problem as all my locos run via pantographs. the only other thing you have to be aware of if you use contact wiper tracks (blocksystem) your DC loco wilol not be able to activate them.

Hi yes i am looking forward to getting it, as it not out until Sept/Oct. They were a common sight in Northern France. I spotted one but could not take any pics as i was on an overnight train heading for Milan!
