Eurospoor (spoor means track) 2012 in Utrecht,The Netherlands,on 19/20/21 October 2012.
This is one of the major modelrailway fairs in Europe with visitors from all over Europe.
I have been there several times and always found something for my Maerklin collection.
The fair is held in a very big exhabition area called Jaarbeurs (=Annual Fair) very close to Utrecht Central Station,in the middle of the country.
Just after the entrance there is a section with traders selling factory new items.
In the middle section a large number of modelrailway layouts are being shown.
In the aft section there is a great number of private sellers selling each and everything for Maerklin and other brandnames,a great source to find the missing Maerklin item for your collection!
The fair always attracts large numbers of pleasantly insane railroad fans!
I might go there this year,i have never come back empty handed!

Looking at the floor plan of the exhibition center ,does Eurospoor use all the buildings or only the major ones . We will be in Germany for a fortnight from 12 Oct & now considering plans to revise the holiday plans to include Eurospoor instead of visiting Mother "M" way down south. So little time & so many things to see & do. We are takeing 2 river cruises to cover the length of the Danube & Rhine starting at Instanbul & finishing at Amsterdam
Then picking up a RV at Frankfurt for 2 weeks driving around Germany. Decisions Decisions.

Tom,

What a great way to see Europe!

Eurospoor uses 3 connecting main halls of the Jaarbeurs complex, and that is a lot of space!
Usually on the opposite side of Eurospoor there is some sort of other tradefair at the same time, but Eurospoor steels the show!
When in Utrecht you could take the local train to our national railway museum, only 10 minutes away from Utrecht central station.

Goppingen is a nice German town with nothing much to do,apart from the Maerklin museum and factory being there.
If there is no special event organised by Maerklin you will have seen the M museum within an hour.

When being in Holland you may consider seeing Haarlem (close to Amsterdam),a nice old town with a great atmosphere, the Bavo cathedral in the centre, numerous shops and restaurants, and the oldest railwaystation in the country with nice authentic detail.

Thanks Paul for the extra info, we will be attending.

With a bit of reorganising we are now including the Spoor on the visit list, hopefully arriving on the Friday morn & staying all day& maybe even Saturday also. It will need many extra Km's & day or 2 of extra driving but have also included a visit to Mother "M" to scrounge thru the pile of reject models in the Museum warehouse if there is any $$$ left over. I can see me having to keep working another year after this trip just to be able to justify the Treff next year at "M" .

Is there anyone else considering a trip to Eurospoor , maybe a meet up somewhere while viewing the layouts etc.

Kind Regards,

Tom In Oz.

Tom,

The fair in Utrecht is called "Eurospoor".
You will find plenty of used or almost new Maerklin stuff there,no need to see Goppingen about that.
I once left there with such a volume of trains that i had to search my pockets for parking money!
On the other hand: a true Maerklin believer should have paid a visit to Goppingen once in a lifetime, touching the holy ground so to speak.
Tough decisions indeed.
If i go to Eurospoor i will go on the Sunday.
Why not go to Utrecht on the Friday, visit the fair and the railwaymuseum, and enjoy Haarlem on the Saterday?
I can recommend a very nice hotel right in the centre of Haarlem.
Saterday is shopping day,all the shops will be open,so will the cathedral, atmosphere is great.

The funny bit is that Maerklin is very silent about Eurospoor in their magazines, perhaps they fear the second hand market there?

If i can be of help just let me know!

Cheers,
Paul.

Quick question before we depart on the big trip. At Eurospoor are there readily accessible ATM's or should I be considering doing buisness with a external ATM before we hit the exhibition? Three days before blast off to Europe for 10 weeks of holidays.

Oh, yes! Right outside the hall. There are no impediments to spending loads of money on Märklin at Eurospoor!

Eurospoor is my favourite train show, and I go every year. You'll love it!

Maybe see you there?

Tom,

Going to Haarlem?
Seeing the Frans Hals museum there?
Frans Hals being almost as famous as Rembrandt?

Thank you all very much for all these ideas. Ian ,we wont be crossing the chunnel this time but are considering next yearincluding visiting Dorset for the Steam Fair & returning to "M"for the Treff as a finale. Thanks Paul for the Haarlem ideas but as time is very stretched this visit we will leave till next year also. Now Nigel, I will be hitting that ATM often during my visit so you had better find another for your own use in case I empty the Eurospoor one totally.

Thanks again & there will be plenty of pictures when we get back .

Tom,

Holland we find a great country to live in but please (PLEASE) be careful at all times and watch for people trying to pickpocket,or worse.
Especially at big railwaystations (like Utrecht) or at get togethers of large numbers of people (Eurospoor) you need to keep an eye on your belongings all the time,i am sorry to say.
Keep your money/wallet hidden in your jacket, secure your camera, that sort of thing.
I guess Holland is no different from other countries in this respect, but better be prewarned in advance.

And remember: traffic on the continent is right hand lane!
Be careful!

And great hunting at Eurospoor, check the second hand market section there,i am sure you will find something nice for your M collection.

Cheers,
Paul.

I visited the 2010 edition, it's my favorite fair in Europe, a lot of wonderful layouts and a second hand market immense, great.
To see all the layouts and the market you need all the three days.

We go to Eurospoor tomorrow (the biggest MRR faire in Europe).
I have read that Tom and Nigel are there too.
A small M-users meeting would have been fun

Hi All,

Me and my son Stefan were at 10 am at Eurospoor and we have a wonderful day !!
3 huge halls full with module layouts, diorama's, scenery stuff and hundreds of meters tables with used trains for sale. Drool Drool

I have seen at least 50.000 used Marklin loco’s and wagons for sale and most for prices 20-30 % lower than the current ebay.de prices..

I think that one can only imagine the enormous size of Eurospoor if you have been there yourself.

A lot off Marklin 00 stuff which I thought was very rare, were just laying there on the tables for sale as if it was fruit !

I've seen a lot of RS790 for € 400 - € 650 and also SEW800, T790, T800, SK 800, TM800, Marklin tinplate accessories, Marklin metal construction kits, Marklin Steam engines.....

I have also seen many Central Stations 2 for only € 499, = which looked new and never used.
And hundreds of new Mobile stations for € 59 and € 79 but then also including the connection box and power supply.
I have seen many people who bought those CS2 and MS2.

I have also seen many mint looking Marklin 3070 TEE sets for € 105,00 and € 119,00 and hundreds of 1940s/1950s 340 and 350 series passenger cars for only € 20 !! I could not believe my eyes !! I think this is really cheap. You can see for yourself in the pictures.

Manufacturers (like Marklin) are not present at Eurospoor..
According to a friend who works in a MRR shop for 35 years, there was 20 years ago a famous great quarrel arose about the sale of used Marklin products on Eurospoor. The Marklin staff has sworn then never ever to be present again at Eurospoor, and other brands have followed this. I'm not 100% sure if this story is true.
What I've not seen was Faller AMS. Mad
I have also seen many men who urgently needed deodorant or shampoo or a toothbrush, but bought trains of apparently their last money….Glare

I've heard many languages today, English, German, Spanish, Italian, French ..... the majority of visitors came from abroad.

And I've seen many people who really bought huge amounts of MRR stuff, they walked with too many bags full of loco’s and so on, just incredible ...
It was clear that most of the traders did very good business !!

I could not spend so much money, we only bought some lovely 1950s Faller houses and a near mint 3326 NS1600 loco.

I went as well to Eurospoor last Saturday with my twin sons, had a wonderfull day , to much to see in 1 day if you ask me.
Regret I had left my camera at home.
Went home emty pocket but not emty handed Smile

My sons got an new Marklin BR 24 and a Roco NS 1100.
Got myself a mint boxed tinplate 4112 DB coach to go with my E111 and a set of slim turnouts .
On the way back home, by train as you will understand , we got to see the SSN 01 1075 at Gouda station changing direction

Today we went ourselves to the SSN in Rotterdam to see the real stuff .
Made a 1 uur trip Rotterdam > Gouda vv with the 23 071 in front , nothing beat the sight and smell of real steam .

All in all a weekend full of trains big and small for us BigGrin

Hi All,

Thanks for all the nice comments, it does me good !! ThumpUp

As promised I now post my home made movie of Eurospoor, it lasts 8:30 minutes (uploading to YouTube took 7 hours !).
I made the movie for all my forum friends, members and guests who could not attend Eurospoor 2012.
Please keep in mind that I'm not a professional filmmaker and that my Camcorder is 2 or 3 years old (Sony DRX-SX15 Handycam)
By the way, I have read that the row of tables that sells used trains stuff was 1 kilometer long !! Scared

The waving clown in the last seconds of the movie is me.

Please let me know what you think of the Eurospoor movie.

Mehmet, Stephen, Alan and Ian, thanks a lot !! ThumpUp

There are already 2 other movies of Eurospoor 2012 on YouTube from other visitors (and there will be coming a dozens of them in the next week).
Those movies focus mostly on the layouts. I have seen many professional camera's on tripods with additional lighting only filming layouts.
I found it more fun to film the event as a whole, with all the lovely visitors and the 1 kilometer market whit used train stuff.

Hi Marco,

The world of model trains never fails to fascinate me.
Thanks for the photos, and the video -it gave me a charge.

Did the traders appear to be happy with sales?

regards
Kimball

Hi Kimball,

Thanks !!
Yes, it was clearly visible that the business went well.
And I've spoken with one trader, this was his best Eurospoor year ever, he told me that 2005 was the worst Eurospoor year ever with relatively few visitors.

Marco
