Hi,

This is a long list of all the older OO documents i know that exist, with the different coded dates included and in different languages. I don't claim it's complete though BigGrin , but i am sure it might be of some help to all the other collectors around.
The marked lines with an "x" are ones i have in my collection, from those, i most have some scans available.
The catalog section is still not complete though.

Feel free to add missing stuff to it

Thank you, this is very helpful.

It would be nice to have this on the Marklin Wiki where everyone can add / edit the documents.

Let me know if you would like me to add it to the Wiki. We could have a page for each document and then have all the print codes and a scan of the front cover or the entire document.

Best regards,

Paul

Thank you Paul.

I would be happy to contribute with this to the wiki. There used to be a German site with all those documents some years ago to which i contributed alot. Sadly it disappeared i think due to problems with marklin copyrights. I have no idea how the situation is these days, but if it doesn't give legal problems, i'd be happy to help you out with what i have.

Greetings,

Dirk

I would be happy to contribute with this to the wiki. There used to be a German site with all those documents some years ago to which i contributed alot. Sadly it disappeared i think due to problems with marklin copyrights. I have no idea how the situation is these days, but if it doesn't give legal problems, i'd be happy to help you out with what i have.

Greetings,

Dirk

Well done Dirk, it's a lot of work, and a subject near and dear to my own heart. I have already done a similar thing with my own document collection, mine is in Excel spreadsheet.

Paul beat me to the suggestion of scans, that also is a lot of work, I have been slowly scanning everything I have for an archive and for several reasons.

For one, it's a lot quicker for me if I want to find something to bring it up on the PC than to have to go to a physical folder. Especially if I am not at home, I can copy my archives to my portable drive and take with me (or just remote into my Desktop PC and leave them online). It's also less 'wear and tear' on my originals when I don't have to handle them so often.

As for Copyright, I am pretty sure that scans of this nature would fall very firmly into the 'Fair Use' category and what your original intent is in copying them. Afterall, there is not one among us who is not in some way interested in Marklin. Most of us have several (dozen/hundred/thousand) items.

I have a LOT of items for which the original instruction leaflet is missing, there are also many items that had a Glossy Brochure and those can be a wonderful additional to any collection.

I would like to think that Marklin would encourage the free exchange of information relating to their products and where Copyright is likely to be an issue for them, you'd hope it would be for items such as obviously current catalogues, and any items which they are officially reproducing as a revenue source.

On the other hand, even when they are scanned, it's not that easy to just print them and recreate your own original printed version. Quality of the scan for one thing, differing paper sizes, weight and quality of the paper, colour printing etc etc. I have reprinted a few items and I'd take a professional reproduction anytime. But where no reproduction is available, a Scan is sure better than nothing. I feel M. have barely scratched this potential market. I love old catalogues, dealer brochures, etc etc (perhaps I'm just an oddball - it's quite possible!)

I also believe one certain way to raise Marklin's interest and retaliation would be to try selling those scanned items (as has already been done by some twerp on Ebay using scans done by others). That's just dumb to do that.

Paul, I'd LOVE to see a centralised Database of all documentation, and perhaps this is something that could be incorporated into your Site, or here on the forum. A difficult thing is avoiding duplication where you end up with someone contributing something that already exists but under a slightly different description and also no point in scanning something that already exists.

If new entries/additions could be 'validated', such as a Mandatory field which is the printing code, that would be a very good initial "does it already exist?" check. You would not need many fields, obviously the printing code, and then a few fields to describe the item itself.

Often the title of the item explains the content, but not always and this is harder than it seems, especially for brochures that cover a range of items, such as a "Summer New Items" leaflet which has a bit of everything, particularly if you want the database to be searchable. That is where adding some helpful categories comes into play and perhaps one way around that is a series of "Does it include..." flags (checkboxes)?

But let's not get ahead of ourselves here, I am just brilliant at making things more complex than they need to be. Blushing (See picture below that a previous Boss did for me once)

Printing Code
Title of the Item (this usually indicates which language it is in but not always if multi-language)
Item or range it covers
Quality (often dependent on the original, and a bad scan to begin with is still better than no scan at all)
Thumbnail of the item or front page

Those are just my thoughts because on what I have already done. I'd be happy to contribute my own scans to such an archive (Juhan already has many of them but there's plenty more to be added). Marklin have produced a MASSIVE amount of literature over the years so the more that contribute to it, the faster it would grow.

There also some merit to the scheme whereby the ore you contribute, the more you get back (content, not $). I have been known to purchase specific items purely to scan them. I am happy with electronic versions in many cases, sadly my bookcase keeps growing and you'd need a library to hold everything (not to mention the sheer weight of all that paper).

Once I have scanned I will often relist on Ebay but it still takes me time to obtain it in the first place, then scan and upload and I have mixed feelings about some freeloader who contributes NOTHING then having full access to create their own library from the hard work of others. I know that's a catch-22 because we all have to start with nothing and I would not want to penalise those who have limited resources, especially in some distant corners where it's near impossible to get anything at all, some of 'our' collections must seem like Mecca to them.

I am almost always happy to share whatever info I have freely, but also love something in return (only if possible).

Food for thought.

Regards

Quite happy to make my catalog scans available for such an archive, but would prefer that they are accessible only by vetted login, rather than freely available to all and sundry on the net. Otherwise they will end up being used for profit by those who are not out to benefit the wider Marklin community, rather, their own pockets.

Some of the items you mention are available as a download from Marklin.
