I love the ET403 because of its inperfection,in the same way most of us men love the inperfect women we share our lives with.
Because, afterall, who is perfect in this life and what in actual fact is the definition of perfect?
The ET403 was the godmother of modern ICE highspeed trains in Germany, let us not forget.
I love her for her uglyness,in the same way i love Meryl Streep for her less than perfect nose, all who have seen Meryl in The Deerhunter and Out of Africa will understand this.
Cheers for Maerklin,we have seen enough black steamers over the last years,at least Maerklin has the guts to come up with something entirely different.
Looking at the picture of the scrap ET403 full of graffity she looks like a fallen angel, having played the role of a diva in her youth, now put aside to die,a painful picture.
I compare her with the less than perfect TEE Ram,a dieseltrain which paved the way of fast passenger railtransport between various European countries.
The Tee Ram is not very pretty either, and rather inefficient for todays standards, but it was a milestone of her own,and that is why she is in my collection.
Please do not judge too hard on this fallen beauty, she was a child of her own era,as the famous loco BR103 was.
Cheers again for Maerklin, you have your courage back which you show to us by releasing these exceptional models, and i hope that more peculiar models are to come in the years ahead!

Hi Paul,

Well said.

The iconic trains (iconic for all sorts of variable reason) deserve to be modelled.

I for one, am glad that Marklin are doing this.
That is as much for reasons that David mentioned (profitability, Marklin continuing).

As others pointed out, it has been done before by other firms, in plastic.

This model in metal is a step upward, and is probably hugely popular amongst German buyers. Again, congratulations Marklin.

Hi Kimball,

Thanks for your moral support.
Must add that the ET403 was in daily intercity service as from 1974,with planned servicespeed of 200 km/h.
Unfortunately, the concept was killed by its own success, because the DB was not able to upgrade tracks to 200 km/h requirements in time.
The ET403 was therefore forced to run at reduced speeds and gradually service was taken over by loco pulled trains.

Talking about ugly trains in intercity service,in Holland the socalled Mat 54 trains were nicknamed Hondekoppen (Dogheads) because of their distinctive noses.
They came into service between 1956 and 1962 and were put aside between 1989 and 1996.
A total of 73 4-unit trains and 68 2-unit trains were built,in addition 12 2-unit trains were built for traffic cross-border with Belgium as from 1957,the latter were put aside as from 1986.
The Dognoses were ugly trains and still very popular till this very day.
The service speed was upto 140 km/h,they were very heavy weight even for their own era,and they were built to last forever.
Trix (before taken over by Marklin) had an early model of this train in green livery,Piko nowadays produces the green, yellow and blue versions, albeit in plastic,of course.
So,all in all, uglyness does not tell the full story.

And,to conclude, why is it that we think steamers are so beautiful?
Upon closer look, most steamers are very ugly, they are very functional machines, their only purpose being carrying the heavy loads for human kind.
What is so beautiful about a series BR52 steamer,i just wonder.

Paul.

Hi Paul,
We have a nostalgia for things past, and steam engines evoke that.

We were boys when the steam engines were around, we looked up at them as mighty symbols of power and man's ability to conquer distance, speed etc.

But if we had become drivers, we would have learnt they were dirty, they were rough to ride on (called iron horses), and they took a lot of manual labour. Who would want to go to work everyday on one of those things? No way.

So we enjoy the models, because they are not dirty, we don't ride on them, and they don't require manual labour. And they remind us of the power, the speed, of man's mastery - boyhood dreams that morphed into cars, and girls ........

The ET403 must evoke many memories for German travellers. It surely must have been iconic for a generation, in a similar fashion the steam engine was for us.

regards
Kimball

Correct Stephen, and it will also be built "mostly of metal".

Right, Nikos - such remark is out of place, indeed. Embarrassing, too.
And now please allow me to correct your statement a bit, my friend Laugh

Well, it isn't Europe alone. Never was. Add Japan, UK and USA to get da picture.

Thanks Stephan for sharing this with us. I saw the cover for the 6/2011 Insider Club News on Märklin's International website, and it truly is an awful looking thing!

Does anybody know what sound functions it has? Because if it has almost nothing, then my budget for Märklin stuff will be used for other things this coming year.

Cheers!

Courage means investing anything between Euro 500,000.- and Euro 1,000.000.- on a model not produced before.
Of course this is a rough estimate.
One should take into account the total cost of Research and Development, including new tooling.
I do recall the cost of producing the 2001 Insider Big Boy was some Euro 1,000.000.- .
For a company which went nearly bankrupt i call this courage.
If it was choosen out of six models pinpointed by Insider members it shows that M is listening to their loyal fans, which is good.
Nevertheless, the investment has to be paid back somehow,so M is taking a risk financially.

Using your definition of courage NS1200, I guess most companies in the world deserves a Purple Heart...
It seems very important to you to put positive labels on Märklin. And why not. I like Märklin too, so let's call them brave.
And when they produce the loco in my Avatar with new tooling, we can call them the bravest of the brave.
