Hi all,

I was wondering if I could get some tips from anyone who may already have successfully installed one tapered-type smoke unit into a Märklin model BR 55.

I purchased this year's snow plow train set which comes with an era IV BR 55. When attempting to install the smoke unit in the locomotive, I noticed that it doesn't seem to fit all the way inside the smoke stack (from the underside, of course) and therefore it is not possible to fit the locomotive's cover back on again. My dilemma is: shall I force the tip of the smoke unit way into the stack by means of a screwdriver or other tool, or shall I bend downwards the electrical conducting metal tab where the smoke unit is supposed to sit, so that I can refit the cover back on? As usual, with Märklin, the operating instructions are "as clear as mud".

Hi Armando,

I once tried to replace a defective smoke generator (it was a BR 18.4).
Took the old one out and couldn't get the new one in. Put the old one back in (to have the smoke stack closed).
The new one fitted into another locomotive.

Long story short: hole sizes vary, smoke generator sizes vary.

Some recommend grease, some recommend force.

There is also a MINUTE Difference in Diameter between Maerklin and Seuthle Smokers and between the digital and anologue modeles.

And I thought Märklin would buy them from Seuthe ...
According to the catalogue Märklin's are identical to Seuthe's. But as I said they do vary in size.

According to the catalogue you "simply insert the smoke generator into the smoke stack from the top or from underneath ...". Catalogue texts are as realistic as serving suggestions on canned food ...

I am going to try to re-insert it, but first I will rub both the smoke unit tip and the locomotive's stack with plenty of smoke fluid. I don't know if it would be a good idea to use grease (Trix grease, maybe?), as it may impair the electrical conductivity between the metal wall of the stack and the smoke unit.

Armando, a round needle file.File,try,file again if necessarily the inside of the smoke stack.I did this on my first BR 55.

Thanks, it seems to be the only possible way of inserting the smoke unit into this locomotive.

Hi All,
I've had the least amount of trouble with the M72270/Seuthe20 smoke units, which install from below the funnel as per the BR55. All the Loks I've put a smoke unit into seem to have had a nice clean machined insert but do usually require a bit of force to insert the smoke unit.
I straighten the contact wire first then after inserting the unit into the start of the funnel, usually a fiddly job Glare , I push it home with the large socket from the Marklin Tool Kit. In one case where it almost fell in and later faulted, (in my M39642 DRG64)I removed it with a punch that was the biggest I could fit down the smoke stack, pushing it by hand, then gave the smoke unit a slight squeeze with small pliers to give it a slight out of round shape, closer to the bottom end of the funnel or fat part, then reinserted it using the socket to force it in and hey presto, it worked again, and continues to do so BigGrin ThumpUp
