I would like to remind everyone that this is actually not a class 42, but a class 41 with oil tender. These were re-classified as class 042 by the DB.
The real class 42 was a 2-10-0, built for war service.
They did something similar with the oil fired class 44, which was re-classified as class 043. (My 37885 is one of these) |

Very nice locomotive indeed, sometimes I been thinking of getting an old 3082 BR041, but this new one looks superior, now I just have to find the money BTW it video clips in the above youtube link, I guess they must have made a rotating layout, and synchronizing of the revolving layout, very smart. It really gives some cool closeups of the loco in action. |

Yeah, it's a clever idea but the radius should be larger to be "ideal"... However, the Fulda club video reviews are still the best "consumer reviews" since they show moving trains, and have more or less neutral comments that point out positives and negatives about a model. They do a great job with these... |

Hi, Stephen
Thanks for sharing.
Marklin did a great job on this beauty indeed.
good details and realistic return crank instead of uncorrectly old look.
I'm even more looking forward to the Insider model 37040 coming.

Have a problem with 37925. I have place on track for first time with CS2, Run fine for about 20 minutes. The next days run goes very slow to dead at half speed, Found small smoke came out in the tender with decoder on top of circuit board and overhead message came up on CS2 screen. I have return with warrenty., Not very happy BR042. |

Sorry to hear that Stephen. Although this probably is an isolated case of bad luck, I'm glad I've taken Dave's old advice not to pre-order anything. To many items these days seems to suffer from "child-sicknesses". But the loco looks great and I'm looking forward to the 41 version with coal-tender.

Opened it up, took the decoder off the 21pin mounting plug, and reseated it, which seemed to fix it, but not good when you've paid 900 euros for it.

I now only buy when a loco has been available for sometime and users have had no problems. Doesnt mean mine will be perfect but so far it has worked OK. IF I end up missing a model then is does not matter and anyway I prefer models that Marklin keep in their catalogue for a reasonable time. Hope it comes back to you soon Stephen but these days it looks like Marklin quality is a thing of the past.

It's really sad to see that there are dealers out who don't even seem to be able to pass known corrective information to their customer(s).
PS: So far no other incident alike has been published.

What should be done is a new booklet sent out to dealers to place in the box before sale.

I thought that Maerklin (See I spelt it right) was in charge of Quality Control but according to Lutz dealers are also responsible for the final QC by opening up all boxes to ensure that the correct items are in fact inside the packaging, even down to checking the running numbers of carriages and correct printing.
If that is the case Maerklin standards are slipping very, very fast.
NN
PS: It has been reported in another Fora that a add on pack of French carriage had both the same running numbers.. |

Steven:
I am curious, when you send an item back to Marklin are you able to communicate with them in English and are they fairly easy to get a hold of and talk to about your specific problem or is a difficult task? I am just curious as I have never sent an item back for a fix.
Thanks,
Chris

My experience with Marklin service is also good, usually around 30 days. To answer Chris' question about communicating: +49 7161 608 222 Yes, my phone calls have been answered in English, and the Marklin employee is able to deal with my query regarding a repair invoice I received. This invoice contained my customer number, and the repair number. If you did not have this sort of information, I don't know how you would get on. For example, if you phoned 14 days after sending them an item, you may not have this information. I don't know if they could trace your item based on your name and when it was likely received. You would not believe how many people send stuff, without any reference such as name/address of the owner. I know - I am in a business that deals with similar things. At the same time, I asked about availability of a replacement pantograph for another model, and was told the status from their computer inventory in seconds. It was all quite efficient. Stephen says he received an email. I have not had this service, (my invoice comes in the mail, which is the first I ever hear on repair status). But maybe I have never given them my email address. regards Kimball |
