In 2009, James May went on a quest to show what was possible to achieve with old-fashioned toys by using them on a scale never seen before. Five toys were successful, but one failed - model trains. James and his team revisit the doomed challenge and make another attempt at building the longest ever model railway track - nearly ten miles long. Joined: 01/02/2004(UTC) Posts: 7,446 Location: Scotland		Hi Stephen. Watched it on TV. They had a lot of stops and repairs before getting to the end of the line. The German team were just the same. I think the problem is laying track on roads and pavements which are far from level. They should have used C track ... think of the cost for 10 miles. dave

		Ray Mostly Marklin.Selection of different eras and European railways Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

You can see a brief couple of shots of my daughter at the very end of the track at Barnstaple as the German Donald Duck arrives. She is in a purple top and has ginger hair, not too difficult to spot. There is a leg shot of me next to her, and we also appear briefly in the background nearer the start as the Town Chrior is fumbling his lines! It was great fun, and yes both teams had their trains and track fully supplied by Hornby International. Over 45,000 pieces of track I believe, I do not know what happened to the track afterwards, but at the first attempt most of it was stolen in the night! Best Regards Ashley

I do wonder whether Märklin stuff would have done better and I reckon that would indeed be the case. However, I do not see Märklin offer 10 miles of C-track for such an attempt. Perhaps Hornby International did a good job here, shedding some positive light upon the MRR-hobbies. @ AshleyH: Again, as many of us, I do envy you for having attended this event in person. @ Steventrain: Thanks for opening this topic, good to be reminded of what I have been watching last Sunday. ;) Best Regards,
