I have watch James May's Toy Stories - The Great Train Race on BBC2 few days ago. In 2009, James May went on a quest to show what was possible to achieve with old-fashioned toys by using them on a scale never seen before. Five toys were successful, but one failed - model trains. James and his team revisit the doomed challenge and make another attempt at building the longest ever model railway track - nearly ten miles long. It have passed at last - Well done to James and other team. You can watch video on. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0120z75 |

Hi Stephen. Watched it on TV. They had a lot of stops and repairs before getting to the end of the line. The German team were just the same. I think the problem is laying track on roads and pavements which are far from level. They should have used C track ... think of the cost for 10 miles.

So, was the "Donald Duck" an M* product or a F* product- it was operating on 18volts whereas the GB stuff ran 12v.
Same with the BR58 - what product was that? |

Same with the BR58 - what product was that? All the German trains were Rivarossi. It turns out they were all Hornby products after all! |

I had the privilege to be involved with both attempts, August 2009 originally and this one two or three months ago. You can see a brief couple of shots of my daughter at the very end of the track at Barnstaple as the German Donald Duck arrives. She is in a purple top and has ginger hair, not too difficult to spot. There is a leg shot of me next to her, and we also appear briefly in the background nearer the start as the Town Chrior is fumbling his lines!
It was great fun, and yes both teams had their trains and track fully supplied by Hornby International. Over 45,000 pieces of track I believe, I do not know what happened to the track afterwards, but at the first attempt most of it was stolen in the night!
Best Regards Ashley

Hi all,
As many of us, I have watched both broadcasts in sheer amazement, being a great fan of both MRR and James May made it a great event to watch. I do wonder whether Märklin stuff would have done better and I reckon that would indeed be the case. However, I do not see Märklin offer 10 miles of C-track for such an attempt. Perhaps Hornby International did a good job here, shedding some positive light upon the MRR-hobbies.
@ AshleyH: Again, as many of us, I do envy you for having attended this event in person. @ Steventrain: Thanks for opening this topic, good to be reminded of what I have been watching last Sunday. ;)
Best Regards,

There is a letter from Simon Kohler in the Model Railway Express web-site (www.mremag.com) in which he says he and five others walked the ten miles between the two towns picking up the track after the event. He describes himself as exhausted.

Thanks to everyone who posted these great links. I am having an enormous amount of fun watching them.
A music question though. What is the piece of music played at the beginning of Episode # 5?
Thanks,
Jeremy. |

Bloody excellent stuff. A good win for Hornby in the porpagnada war for trainsets. Will marklin give this a shot in germany?? Nah that will cost money The reliability will be one up for sure for Marklin and hopefuly Mr Pluta has a crack
