Hi all,

This is my first post in the collector's corner.

Although my Marklin R950 Loco and R959 tender are clockwork,I reckon I could share them with you.

I just purchased them and the track from my favourite shop E-bay. Laugh

The only history I got, was that the sellers father played with the train set during the years leading up to the 2nd World War.

This would place the set around the mid 1930's,any extra information on this would be much appreciated.

The Loco is in very well played with condition, but I feel this adds to it's charm.

It runs really well, working on a short video just now.

Ian.

That's a really neat piece, Ian! Of course you know you'll have to find some cars to go with it. This is only the beginning! Wink

Hi Ian,
Congratulations, very playable model. Apart from the slight bends in the roof, and the normal wear to paint surface, it looks very good condition. It appears to be in the colours of the Bavarian Railway.
Or it could even be the North British Railway, both extant prior to 1923 (give or take a year)'
Or even the French L'Est. They all used these colours.

Hi all,

Video of the R950 running.

With the track on the wooden floor, and the motion of the Loco, you can see the track joints opening.

Ian.

Hi all,

I had contacted the seller, who was also the owner and asked if he could supply me with some history on the train set.

He very kindly sent me the following E-mail.

Ian.

Dear ian.houston,

Hi Ian,

The train set was bought by my Grandfather for
my father in 1940. The train set would have
certainly been bought new and possibly from a
local toy shop, they lived in Esher, Surrey, at the
time. My father is looking for a photograph which
my Grandmother took of him playing with it
when he was about 4 years old. Unfortuately the
toy set was later passed down to his three children,
myself being the youngest, and it was probably at
this time where it got its many battlescars. I
distictly remember lining up a number of 'play
people' victims on the track and winding the
train up to it's full tilt so they would meet their
doom in some train wreck.

I hope you are happy with it.

Makes great reading and of course a copy of the photograph would be wonderful

Ian.

Hi Ray,

Had a good look at your 1932 catalog page and those coaches do look very like them.

Only one small problem, the price of one coach is nearly what I paid for the train set. Cursing

Thanks for looking, but I'll need to give them a miss.

Ian.

Hi all,

Bought this tinplate Märklin "station house" from e-bay.

Do you think it's the correct scale to go with my R950 Clockwork Loco.

The house has the number 61 on it, and the faded mark underneath says...Franz?????spiel Märklin Bern.

Any help much appreciated.

Ian.

Hi Ian,

The house is #2161 from the mid 1930s. Unfortunatly the crossing-sign seems to be missing.

The stamp says "FRANZ CARL WEBER *BERN*" (round) and "SPIEL WAREN" (German for "toys") in the middle. WEBER is and was the most important toy-dealer in Switzerland. Founded in Zurich, they have stores in all major towns in Switzerland. A little bit of their history in German: http://www.fcw.ch/franz-carl-weber/geschichte/

Hi all,

Looking for a bit information with regards to the track used with O gauge.

My R950 clockwork Loco runs on 32mm O gauge track that has a solid center third rail.

Can you get an electric O gauge Loco that then runs on the same track.

Been looking thro' the old catalogs but still unsure.

Thanks.

Ian.

Hi Ian,

Your loco appears in the 1932 catalogue, as a single item and as part of a set (images attached below). The same loco in electric version would be R12950.

It's not in the 1934 or later catalogues that I can find, and I have none from the 1920's to refer to.

I purchased an R12920 Loco and a heap of track at auction some years ago in NZ and had the loco body restored by an enthusiast who did a pretty good job of it. Image also attached. You will have little trouble finding 0 gauge electric loco's to go with your track, it just depends how much you want to spend :-)

Hope this helps
