Hi Everyone,

I guess this is a dumb question, however, I have to ask it. What is the difference between a Lokpilot & a Loksound?" Blushing

Greg,

ESU decoders are multi protocol, which means they are suitable for different model train locos, e.g. Analog: AC DC,, Digital: DC DCC AC,

they are programmable, free updates with loc programmer, and if anything goes wrong, you don't have to send the whole loco in for service or replacement, just the decoder.

Some Lokpilots do not have the motorola protocol, there DCC only.

I have a follow up question concerning the decoders being programmable. To do the programming what do you need? I am running everything off of a MS1 can I use that or do I need one of the more elaborate controllers?

Thanks,

Chris

You need to use a lokprogrammer
http://www.esu.eu/en/products/lokprogrammer/

This connects to your PC and to a test track on which you place a loco. Then you can read the settings, change whatever you want to change and then write it back to the loco. You can also completely change the sound of the loco if you like.

Regarding the Lokprogrammer it only programmes ESU decoders.

You can change the first 5 or 6 CV's , e.g. address, acceleration & braking delay etc. etc.
To change lights or digital uncouplers a lokprogrammer makes it very easy.
the same goes for setting long addresses.

With a MS1 you can only change the address, max speed, acceleration, and deceleration, and maybe max volume. this might be enough to get you by.

Hi,

With a MS, you can program the 79 first CVs of a lokpilot.
The value you can enter is limited to 80.

Besides the Lokprogrammer, you can also program the ESU decoders with an Ecos or CS1 Reloaded (v3.x.x) The only limitation AFAIK is that you have to have a Lokprogrammer to be able to upload sound files to an ESU Loksound decoder. The Ecos/CS1R can do everything else.

And as others have mentioned you can perform some limited programming with a 6021 or MS1.

AFAIK you can't change "whatever you like" with a mfx decoder - it's been locked by Marklin. Am I correct? Confused

COrrect.
there are only a few Parameters that can be changed on an MFX Decoder. Sound is totally locked.
Speed Curve, Min and Max accelleration, Braking spreed etc.

I agree. This is the most precise, accurate and to the point answer to the question posted.

But by that logic

Lokpilot: has Pilot.
Loksound: no Pilot.

Now that's a waffle answer.
