Hi all Is it possible/feasible? to change the close couplers on the newer locos (37097, 37453, 39643, 39392) with relex couplers? I am able to get a pack of 10 relex coupler heads (72060). Thanx as always, Joe

Just pull out the coupler and insert the new one. Why do you want to change them Joe.

dave I have a few older locos without NEM Pockets and Relex Couplers. I am going to change the front Carriage Close Couplers with Releax couplers as currently I have frequent uncouplings. The change eliminated the uncouplings. NN |

dave Thanx Dave....all my wagons and locos have the old relex fitted, so I was wondering, as I build up my stock of new digital locos, if it was feasible to fit the relex on to them.... Joe

the coupler height on many of the new locos - particularly if they have telex uncouplers - is lower than the relex couplers on cars. For non-telex, if you replace them with relex, you may have to trim the downwards hanging "lever" to avoid hangups & shorts. You will probably also have to make some height adjustments.
I don't think you can do anything with the telex ones (e.g., BR 50's) if you still want to maintain telex functionality.
Even though I think the close couplers are a "giant step backwards" from relex couplers, I've put them on most of my freight cars so that the newer locos can couple with them.

Old thread, but running into this problem with close-relex coupling, getting relex low lever on old style wagon stuck on raised pukos of M switches. Problem does not occurr relex-relex coupled. Either trim the lever of relex coupler or replace close coupler with relex coupler on loco. Latter preferred, but which relex coupler? Pocket insert or replace entire pocket? Ben |

I replaced a lot of my couplers with the Hornby magnetic couplers R7400 and they work very well. Easy to couple and easy to uncouple. |
Take it easy . . . . or any other way you can get it !!!!
