HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Christmas, as every year, means going through the Märklin (and not only) collection, hoping that the upcoming year will see that dream lay-out that I have been planning since some time. Fortunately, that date seems approaching. I am in a new home and have a perfect train room. Just the time to finish some minor work beforehand and I should be ready to start by February. I will keep you posted in the appropriate forum.

Meanwhile, I am "playing" around with the trains I would like to run. My lay-out will be Swiss in nature and I have collected a few consists. Here they are.

Era III, SBB Ae 3/5 - M3456, coach set M42385, coach M4138

UserPostedImage

I really like this locomotive that I purchased via e-bay (from a starter set). I also have a brown one that I converted to Digital. The coaches came also via e-bay.

Era III/IV, Seetalbahn, SBB De 6/6 – M37522, roco coaches 44730 and 44731

UserPostedImage

I got the coaches first then last year I found the locomotive on e-bay.

Here is a detail of the passage between the cars. Very well detailed.
UserPostedImage

Era IV, SBB Re 4/4 I M39420 followed by Liliput coaches (leichtstahlwagen) and M43914 cab control coach for push-pull action

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

The Liliput coaches (387414 -604 -714 -804 -914) are quite nice and detailed but need to have many details applied and I don’t know how reliable it would be to run them on a lay-out (I saw details fly off of other Liliput cars).

This is a detail of this nice locomotive

UserPostedImage

Era IV Schnellzug, SBB Ae 6/6 M28851.1 followed by Liliput coaches

UserPostedImage

Also a nice restaurant car

UserPostedImage

And a SBB Sleperette (maybe an era V, don’t know)

UserPostedImage

Era IV, BLS Ae 4/4 Hag 182 followed by Hag baggage car (465) leichtstahl coaches (441 and 451) and cab-control car (421)

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

The coaches and loco came from e-bay. They are a mix of DC and AC.

I really like this locomotive, one of my preferred ones. Here some detail

UserPostedImage

Era V, SBB-NS RAm I TEE – M39700

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

One of my recent purchases via e-bay. I did originally skip on this set but then decided to add it to my collection.

Era IV, Swiss Express, SBB Re 4/4 IV Hag 211 and Lilliput coaches 388984 -554 -754 and -885

Era IV, TEE Bavaria, SBB Re 4/4 IV Trix 22148, coaches set “Bavaria” M43852 + Trix coaches 23423 and 23434

UserPostedImage

The loco is a Trix model that i will convert to M digital. Here is a close-up
UserPostedImage

A closer view of the dome car by Trix
UserPostedImage

Very nicely detailed interior. Notice the stairway to the upper level
UserPostedImage

Also this nice restaurant car by Trix
UserPostedImage

I will have to find the way of correcting the destination signs. Here is the one on the Bavaria set:
UserPostedImage

And this is on the Trix cars:
UserPostedImage

Era IV, TEE Gottardo, SBB RAe 1051, M 39540

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

The much maligned model by Marklin but, for me, a beautiful one. A detail on the very elegant front.
UserPostedImage

The quality of the detail is very good.
UserPostedImage

Era V, Eurocity, SBB Re 460 M3752 followed my M coaches 4365, 4368, 4369 and 42172

UserPostedImage

A nice panorama coach

UserPostedImage

Era V, IC double deck, SBB Re 460 M39602, Roco coaches 45461, 45460. 45462, 45470 and 45464

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

My problem with this set is that it is very long since the coaches are 1:87. I much rather prefer the shorter coaches and more of them.

Here is close-up of the restaurant coach

UserPostedImage

Era V, InterRegio, SBB Re 4/4 IV M3434 and Roco Coaches 44495, 44496, 45088

UserPostedImage

The loco had been part of my collection since several years. I recently got the coaches, I think this is a quite prototypical set in Switzerland today.

Era V, Zurich S-Bahn, Re 450 Hag 284, coaches from M set 28505, cab-control car Fleishman 65132

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

Rode this train in Zurich a few times this past summer, from the city to the airport.
A detail of the engineer

UserPostedImage

Era V, Cisalpino set, M26544 + coach M41897

UserPostedImage

I believe Cisalpino ceased to exist and now SBB and FS-Trenitalia are organizing trains between Italy and Switzerland. But this train will remain operative on my lay-out!

Era V, SBB InterCity, M34615 + coaches set M42166 and cab-control car M42179

UserPostedImage

I managed to get the cab-control directly from a Swiss shop. It took some time but it was worth to complete the set
UserPostedImage

Finally, an Austrian set. I really like this locomotive, M3458

UserPostedImage

I don’t know if they are all prototypically correct but I still like them that way.

Enjoy!

A nice collection of Swiss items.

A couple of comments regarding correctness:

In your consist with the Re 4/4I (39420), among the Liliput coaches, you have one with the center doors. These coaches were not designed for push pull operation. You could replace this coach with one of the Liliput EWIs if you can find one. I am also not certain that the baggage car as made by Liliput was authorized for push pull operation either. Maerklin's model (43401) was used in such trains. If you can find a Maerklin 26534 at a good price, buy it, use the coaches with the Re 4/4I and the Re 4/4II for another train.

For your Ae 3/5, Roco has a very nice set of historic coaches.

For the BLS Ae 4/4, AFAIK this type of locomotive was not used for push pull operations. The pilot coach could be used with a Re 4/4I or BDe 4/4 only.

For your Bavaria (TEE) Set, the Dome coach and the Restaurant coach with the "Bueckel" were not used on this route, but were used for the TEE Rheingold and the Rheinpfeil. The Rheingold was pulled by a Re 4/4I and not by a Re 4/4II. Still, your train could symbolize a typical German TEE train on Swiss rails.

Your EC train is nice. The SBB never actually repainted their dining coaches (as modelled by Maerklin). The current livery is as reflected in the 42173 model. You could also add the first class SBB coach from the 26544 Cisalpino Set as these coaches are now used in IC/EC traffic of the SBB.

The Cisalpino coaches (FS) can be mixed with XMPR (FS) coaches (41895/41896) to form a current FS Intercity into Switzerland.

I like your IC with the 3434. If you can find one, you can add a RailTop 21401 (AC) or 11401 (DC) BDt pilot in the NPZ colors or the earlier Lima model 309410 to make this one a push pull.

The IC 2000 and S-Bahn trains are very nice.
The Swiss Express is a gem and is a rarity as the orange loks were not often used with the matching liveried coaches after the lok and first coach couplings were reconverted for normal operation.

For your Austrian train, you can add one 4365 Panorama coach and a 42173 for a reproduction of the EC Transalpin, now pulled by a 1016/1116.

For your Ae 6/6 with Liliput coaches, the coaches can derail if using Maerklin's 7203 couplers. By using Roco's Universal Close Coupler, I have been able to run the trains buffer to buffer as each coupler provides the necessary extra mm for clearance. I do the same for most LS Models, ACME and RailTop coaches as well.

You can find more info about current consists at www.reisezuege.ch

If you have any more questions, contact me or post here.
Once again, thanks for the nice photos.

Regards and Happy New Year

Mario,
Yes, me too, I've got a soft spot for Swiss locos.
If you ever want to sell the 1:87 double decker coaches let me know.
I had six of them and sold them, I'm regretting it now.

Mike, afak currently the Re 4/4 are used mostly on passenger trains while the Re 6/6 are used mostly on freight trains.. is it right? I saw plenty of Re 460 and Re 4/4 in Zurich Hauptbanhof when I was there but no Re 6/6.

I will try to get some of the models you suggest.

Mario,

the part number for the Roco Universal Close Coupler (Set of 50) is 40397. I believe that the couplers are also available in smaller quantities. Check with your Roco dealer.

When the SBB split it's locomotives between Passenger and Cargo divisions, each unit had a number of almost every lok type. Towards 2000, the divisions agreed to reassign some loks to the other division.

SBB Passenger gave up it's Re 6/6 and Ae 6/6 Loks (and maybe some Re 4/4II as well). In exchange, they received Re 460 073-118 which had previously been used for freight traffic. This was done because the Passenger division required the Re 460 for additional push-pull (IC2000 and EWIV) operations on the new high speed line between Zuerich and Bern and other routes.

Since then, it has become very rare to see a passenger train pulled by an Re 6/6 or Ae6/6. This happens today only if there is a lok breakdown and there is no Lok from SBB Passenger available to fill in. If you want to find some classic videos, check on YouTube or visit re-os.nl, a site that sells nice SBB videos.

Here are a few consists for Swiss trains:

(Riviera Express)
Roco BLS Ae 4/4 - Trix 23414, Ma 43391, and 1 or 2 1:93 DB UIC Coaches.

Modern IR (ie Basel-Locarno)
Re 4/4II - Ma 4368 - Ma 4365 - Ma 26544 (Apm) - Ma 42163 - Ma 42162

Gotthard Leichtschnellzug (1965-1972) (ie Zuerich-Lugano)
Ae 6/6 - 43401 - 43361 - 43361 - 43391 - 43371 - 43381

1980s IC (Stuttgart -Zuerich - Milano)
Re 6/6 - 4267 - 4267 - 4189 - 4292 - 4292 - 4225

IC (CH-IT) (ICs from Milano to Zuerich, Geneva or Basel)
Re 4/4II - 41896 D - 41895 A - 41895 B - 41895 B - 41896 B
Today, these coaches can be mixed with the Cisalpino ones from the 26544 Set as well.

EC Bavaria (today)
Maerklin (1:100)
Re 421 - 4266 - 4368 - 42173 - 4269 - 4269 - 4269
Roco (1:87)
Re 421 - 44669 - 44771 - 44529 - 44770 - 44770 - 44770

WOW, Amazing.

As a Swiss train modeler this are the photos I was waiting to see for a long time.

Very good selection of swiss trains, I also have some of your models with the same composition, your election of models is very good and prototipicaly accurate.

Keep posting, please¡¡¡¡¡

I thought I would take some photos of consists using my collection:

Here is the first. This would be a typical IC (Intercity) or IR (Interregio) on the Gotthard. Such trains run between Basel or Zurich and Lugano or Locarno. Normally, the trains join the Gotthard route at Arth-Goldau, where they are scheduled to depart to the south alternately every half an hour. The reverse trains are on a similar schedule from Bellinzona to Arth-Goldau, where the Zuerich and Basel bound trains continue north on separate routes.

The train is made up of a Re 460, an Apm coach in the Cisalpino livery (26544), a panorama coach (4365), an EWIV B in ICN colours (42166), a Bpm EC (4369) and an EWIV B in the original green/white livery (42162). This combination of various liveries is sometimes made more interesting by adding a restaurant (42173) and a baggage coach (Roco 45188 or 45189).

Nice composition Mike.

With regard to the IC double deck cars Roco vs. Hag, do you happen to know if the Hag cars have close-coupling mechanism? From the pictures it seems not. I wonder if it would be possible to retro-fit them.

Mario,
They have the coupler pocket mounted on an arm that closes up the distance between the cars when they come out of a curve but the coupler itself is not a close coupling type. The Marklin couplers do fit but will make tracking on R2 curves problematic as they don't allow much play.

Thanks for the picture of the consist Mike. You just confirmed what I thought about which Cisalpino 1st class car was SBB owned. Now I can combine the others with some FS stock.

Here's another nice consist that I put together using some of my Maerklin coaches:

EC Transalpin: Basel SBB - Zuerich - Buchs - Feldkirch - Vienna
2 2nd class OBB EC Coaches from the 42725 Set, plus a 42173 SBB WRm Diner and a Panorama Apm and First Class Apm coach from the 4367 Set (same as 4365 and 4368), pulled by a Roco Re 4/4II (69845). As usual, the consist had to shortened to fit the average layout. You could also use the coaches from the 2009 42726 Set, which had five instead of 3 OBB EC coaches.
