Historically correct consist for Br E19 Reichsbahn

Hi to all,
I recently purchased a Br E19 wine red (the correct colour) with Reich eagles on sides and ends. I know that these locos are designated for express service between Munich and Berlin. But this service never realized.
Does anybody have an idea on what sort of coaches would be historically correct for this loco? I have abundance of Reichsbahn express cars - the green ones. Would these be ok?

I run mine always with "schurzenwagen", but it also pulls my rheingold now and then . I assume that during the war, when they were in service (untill the electricity became a problem), strange consists and loco usage were not uncommon. My E19 had the problem that its sideskirts (or more precise, the indusi magnets) often collided with C-track curved switch lanterns. Newer E18&E19 models have modified skirts with the indusis more shifted to the center of the loco. Do you have the same problem with this? For reliability I cut of those things. (But I can drive the model without issues now) Bert

Bert hi,
Thanks for the answer.
I haven't run the loco yet but I use M-track; I don't know if the lanterns are at the same distance as C-track.
I think you're right about the skirt-cars. I will have to buy a set. Any recommendations on that?

Hi Cem,
The Marklin DRG skirted cars are ideal for this loco, but they have not been available for some time. The only available skirted cars are Era III, with the DB "cookie" logo.
As an alternative, you could consider the Liliput skirted coaches. They are, I believe, currently available and also quite a bit cheaper than the Marklin equivalents.

Ray hi,
Thanks for the tip. I'll try eBay for M*, if all else fails I will consider Liliput. A friend have had disappointing experiences with Liliput so I'm a bit reluctant.
But in any case input on Liliput schürzenwagen will be appreciated.

At the time when I bought my E19 the Hamburg Berlin set (from the 2004 insider if I recall correctly) was being sold at dumping prices, they apparantly had an overproduction back then. That set might still be easy to find/cheap now.

Goofy Like the world record steamers class BR 05 (200,4 km/h)the top speed electrics class BR E 19 (Vmax 225 km/h) were given the special colour of "LMS"-red to mark them as special locos in the herd of black steamers and grey-green electrics. The usual coaches they would pull were all more modern DRG coaches like Bauart 29, 30, 35 or Schürzenwagen. Thomas

Hi Cem,
While its true that the E 19 did pull the more modern skirted coaches, it did pull any D Zug.
The key is to ensure that the coahes have the eagles on it as it is a post 1935 paint job that Marklin have done on it. The brawa D Zug coaches are aslo well worth a look.
D40 from Berlin to Munch was made up of the following coaches 1 Post4u 1 Pw4u 2 C4u 1 AB4u 1 WR 1 AB4u 2 C4u 1 BC4u (from Magdeburg to Munich)
Hope this helps

John hi,
It indeed helps, thanks!
One small question though: the eagle you mention; is it the "wings spread out" one or the round DRG logo with the eagle?
I think I found a nice set on eBay.

It is the 'wing spread out' type you need, with the censored swastikas. The other logo is from before the NS-regime.

Did you know that,Buddha did had svastika symbol as a symbol on the chest about 500 BC...? Svastika was an symbol inside of the sun, which india people did sympaty for. So why to censored svastika symbol on the locomotivs...? So it´s not svastika symbol that is wrong, instead it´s nazist that shall been censored. Goofy |

Goofy Well, I didnt censor the locos, and I tend to agree with you. This is a very touchy subject though in Germany. Swastikas are forbidden there, except when in a strict historical context. The original from this E19, that can be seen in the Nurnberg museum, has the eagle symbols, with swastikas. There is a very long (IMHO) explanation on the museum website on why they left these symbols on the loco. Another E19 (in Berlin if I'm correct) doesn't have the swastikas anymore. Bert

Found 'em, bought 'em but I guess there exists a complementary two coach set too ... means more hunting. Ray, since E19 is supposed to pull strange consists I couldn't resist this Liliput set on the side : Cem. |

Very nice, Cem.
I'm trying to decide at the moment what coaches to get for my "Olympic rings" Br18.1. The obvious choice is those "Eagle and Swastika" skirted coaches.
My other choices are either the pre-war Rheingold coaches from Liliput, or the CIWL coaches from Rivarossi. I don't think either of those are from the correct period, though.
The new Marklin Rheingold and CIWL coaches are a bit too pricey for my pocket, though they are very nice! Besides, a five coach train is too long for my layout, and I'd only run it with three or four coaches for the foreseeable future.

Ray hi,
I plan to run the Liliput set with a Mitropa diner added; will make a weird consist.
I think, for your olympic loco the best choice would be the M* Mitropa set above (it has plates for Hamburg-Berlin, still can find it on the net for about Euro 105 - 110, bought mine almost for the same price postage included).
By the way, problem solved, and thank you all for the valuable input.

Interesting topic guys, thanks. Enjoy your purchases Cem!
Yes Goofy, I did know that, I may have seen it on the History Channel, or read it on the internet at some time. Interestingly enough there was an episode of Star Trek Voyager on TV here recently, where the holodeck malfunctioned, and the ship was taken over by a bunch of aliens wearing Nazi uniforms, displaying Nazi flags, complete with swastikas! I was quite surprised to see that displayed on TV!

Hi Cem,
I would run the train with the diner as the last coach. There are pictures of the E19 pulling a baggage car and two coaches in regular service so it not un-prototypical to do so.
Cheers

John, right on spot. That's what I was planning to do. By the way, I couldn't find any photos of e19 on the net, do you have links? Cem. |
