Hi Everyone,
Sarting to look at display cases for some of locc/wagons etc. Any
feelings on rails or no rails? I remember reading a comment that
traction rings might go flat, grateful for any feedback/thoughts.

Personally I think tracks looks better. Especially for a display case it's important that things look good.
It might mess up the traction tires, but then again, so does driving a train, or even keeping a train stored in a box. Traction tires are generally also fairly easy to replace. |

I put rails in mine. Since I didn't have to worry about powering them, I used cheap(er) Atlas code100 flex track to put them on. A heck of a lot cheaper than Marklin track.

However, some cases come with HO scale grooves routed in the shelves. That would work too. |

This is an interesting topic.
Can anyone recommend a display case manufacturer in the USA?
I would prefer to have track inside. It would make the models look more realistic.

I don't have a display case-I use a standard wall shelf. I use track; I agree that it looks better and helps keep things in line.

I have most of marklin on Peco tracks in the display case. |

The display cases I have have rails on every level. I have switched from M track which I had a lot of to K track it makes all the trains look better.

Armando: Yes, I got the mirrored back. I am very happy with it. The one piece door is a little unwieldy, but I don't open it that often and with a one piece front you don't have a vertical line down the middle you would have with a two piece door.
I went the the plant and picked mine up, but they do ship. |

If your train room is not in the basement, could the sun light or glare (even if not direct) eventually damage the models exposed in a display case? How could this be prevented? Do these cases come with some sort UV-treated glass? |

It seems most people uses rails.
I don't, because my case has shelves made by glass. These are beautiful because you reduce shadows, but for the same reason you don't have to use rails.

I don't have any display cases, but a member at our local Marklin club has a case similar to Ron's, except the side of the case opens and a whole train can be removed, still mounted on its rails. The train can be taken to a special siding on his layout, connected to the layout, and the train can be driven off without having to re rail anything. Putting the train back in the display case is a matter of driving the train back on the siding, then removing the base with train, and placing it back in the display case.
Rather ingenious I thought (then I saw the recent pictures of the helix, with trains able to be driven off the helix straight into the display case).

Armando: The case is made of acrylic and is not UV filtered. This is not an issue for me since it is in the basement, but would be a concern if it were in direct sunlight. I have it lit with a three element traklite with compact fluorescent bulbs. |
