Dear members...!

As you know yourself,i´m using era 1 models.

I have an question to you:
What type of trackballast should i used to replacement them on the track...?
Shall i use sand like from Faller...?
Or should i use Woodland Sceinic trackballast like "buff" or "brown" medium...?
I´m not so sure how it was under era 1,because there is no colourpictures from era 1 which i can see it...!
I wonder if there was only sand on the track, but are not sure about colourtype of the sand too...?

Goofy confused

The best ballest i have found is very fine kitty litter. It holds well and the color is great if you want to add some brown color to it mix with coffee grounds.

In Era 1, or the pioneer days of railways, in The Netherlands tracks were laid direct in sand. To model that correctly, you have to buy K tracks and put it on a sand base. Sand was also laid over the sleepers, so only the rails were visable.

Look to this picture of a train at Baarn (nearby Hilversum, around 1890). No ballast is used, only sand.

So using C tracks and ballast would not be correct.

Waowww...! [:p]

Fantastic pictures...! [:p]

I did bought today 3 differents ballast and they are:
Woodland Sceinec B72 fine brown
B73 fine buff
B80 medium buff

B72 and B73 which are fine, looks like more sandtype.

I shall work at home by placement ballast and dirty too after that with colourpowder like earthdust or little more dirtdust.

You will seen the pictures soon from me,by to see the results in differents way.

Have an nice weekend,fellows...! biggrin

Sand? [:0] I wonder what rain would did with the trackballast these days?!

I was wondering, did the coal left a distinctive mark on the trackballast, like the catenary does nowadays?

Much problems had to be solved in Era 1. Brunel laid the tracks on sleepers in the same direction as the rails, Stephenson prefered rocks. Today we use concrete and ballast. Don't forget much solutions had to be invented in Era 1, and the railways were very young.

I have done some work by placement ballast at the track and the results did become very differents...! Smile

First i did painted rust at the sides of the rails, then i did laid ballast and did put Sceinic cement to spray on it.

Under the night,Sceinic cements that stands of woodglue and water did dried so ballast did become hardened.

Finally,i did dirty ballast by using colour powder that was ogrebrown, kind of earthdirt.

The results...?

AMAZING...! biggrin[:p]

The best ballast was Buff fine, that fits good as era 1 type...!

Perfect...! [:p]

Under trainstation stop,i shall dirty little some of black colourpowder where steamlocomotiv are mostly stop on the area of track.

I will take pictures on my results with the track later,so you will see the results...! biggrin
