Interesting topic
I have only two of these nice old boxes, one for a 3000 and a 3071. Maybe a photo collection of the boxes one by one is in place? Or maybe it allready excists?
Does anybody know about replacement boxes or something for 3308 and 3309? They came in some strange transparent/blue plastic boxes that turn yellow and fall apart. I have temporarely tried to fix them with good tape, but it lasts only for a short time. Fortunately the tape is removable.
Best regards Svein, Norway

Agree that the artwork on the older boxes is very nice - much better than the non-descript, bland look M has now.
I'm too young to have such boxes, save for one coal car I have which has the nice drawing on it.

Hi Svein,
not really a collection but a few pics which I once took out of sheer boredom ...

This is a problem, I am sorry. Try to get a proper box from a later edition of the BR 85 to properly store the loco. They can be obtained from Märklin. Keep the old plastic box and store it as safe as possible. No matter how torn apart, some collectors pay a lot more with the original box. Everybody who knows about the loco also knows about the sorry state of its boxes ...
I have only ONCE seen an undemolished box for 3309, and that one had never been touched .....
Many regards,
Hans

BTW, this site always has Marklin stuff for sale, generally at reasonable prices. I recently bought a 1969 V200 in mint condition for USD140. For other Aussies and Kiwis, postage from NZ is a lot cheaper than from US and Europe.
cheers,
Doh, now you guys have discovered our secret source of Marklin stuff.
There's a nice 3070 Tee Railcar set on Trademe at the moment.....
If you're looking for empty Marklin boxes, check this guy out
www.bear11.be
. Henk has plenty of empty Marklin boxes (he sells on Ebay as well, but probably not for much longer - excessive fees). The website is still under development, so may be a bit rough around the edges. Unfortunately Henk has no boxes of the older variety - pre 1971.
The artwork on the old boxes is something to behold - unfortunately I don't have any.....

Hi John,
Those marvelous boxes [:p]
Shouldn't we all demand Märklin makes these boxes as from 2007 standard packaging.
Kind regards

Interesting..... those words in the box: "Locomotiva americana diesel" are the very first Portuguese words I have ever seen in any Märklin product at all...
I wonder why did they do that?

Thanks for posting those pics, John!
This is the one I'd like to have. I actually prefer it over the common Santa Fe version. So far, I haven't added an American model to my collection. That just might have to change [}:)]!
As for the boxes: they'll never make anything this nice again. I went to the first dedicated Märklin shop in Holland which was opended on Dec. 1 in Utrecht. Just imagine that, a shop which sells nothing but Märklin (well, and Trix). Endless rows of white boxes wherever you look. Very impressive. Now, just imagine all those boxes being light blue....

I currently have two BR03 and a BR216 which could use a box should I require to remove them from the layout and store them away.
As aready suggested, go to
www.ebay.de
, you should be able to find plenty of empty Marklin boxes - just search for Leerkarton Märklin.
Also check out Henk at
www.bear11.be
, he has about 200 boxes for sale.
Cheers

Oscar, you're right - she's a dream !!!
There's only one drawback. Since quite scarce she's calling premium prices ... [:I]

[size=2]<font face="Verdana]No doubt, no doubt. Hey, I was looking at your picture again and I noticed that the loco has the Santa Fe colours on the roof! Was that how they were originally painted? It sort of looks as if an already painted model (in SF colours) was re-done in yellow, except for the roof! Strange.</font id="Verdana]

Hi Oscar/John,
The roof colour of the UP F7 is OK (yellow + medium gray, instead of red and bright gray/silver); the form of the paint scheme of the roof was the same for SF and UP (must have had to do with "fast" looks). However, the back part of the roof
is
Santa-Fe, not UP-style [some detail parts are missing; seem to remember something about passenger (SF) vs freight (UP) diesel, but not sufficiently interested to remember it exactly].
Jeroen
Jeroen

Hi guys - that link to bear11 still won't work [xx(] ... are there others, please (not ebay)
I'm seriously thinking about getting a few of those nice brand new repros for some of my oldtimers.
With price tags the same as the locos (or higher) the originals are out of this world for me ... [B)]

Looks like they are used originals in nice condition - but most of them are for cars, alas ...
Do we have any maker(s) of brand new repro boxes for locos

Markus Schild has told me recently that most or all of Märklin's artists who designed the catalogs and boxes were originally from Austria.
I simply suppose they have been dead for quite some time, or some may still enjoy their retirement days.

I will do my best but my Corel Draw program does not work at the moment. Please hold on for a couple more days.
This pic actually is from the Ebay auction I won last month. I had chased this box for quite some time. The condition is like-new, inside and outside. And I have the stuff to fill it and enjoy my collection.
Thank you all for the nice comments !!

Wowwowwow - coolness !!! Big congratulations Hans, what a treasure [:p][:p][:p]
BTW - Juha (Brakeman) won the very same set in January (HO forum, D&RGW topic, page 2)
And you're right - most ebay pictures are way too small, almost impossible to resize [xx(]

Thanks for information, Hans. Well, let's hope the latter for them ...
As we all said a thousand times, here - if M were clever they'd revive that classic box design.
The paintings are there, and for newly released models they'd surely find some good artists.
Or they could try to hire The Great Almagik for his masterpiece pictures [:p][:p][:p]
Such would definitely push sales. Since we buy what attracts the eye ...

I have a question for you Hans, what shall be in this truly artistic piece of art? Is it a set, loco?
It says on the box;
"Zugzusammenstellung mit gleisoval ohne transformador"
Train set (loco with waggons) with oval track but no trafo.

I get a feeling this is a rare set.
Nothing found in both Koll's catalogues.
Those boxes were used from aproximately 1958 till 1968.

I am sorry everybody who was intersted in this topic but I have been away for a couple of days, and now I have to catch up in my job.

Yes, you are quite right !!!! The side flap information tells me : 3160 train set, the translation given by hxmiesa is more or less exactly how Märklin described these sets in their catalogs in the sixties. It contained: Loco 3060 (Santa Fe), Box Cars 4571 + 4572, Gondola 4575 and Caboose 4570. And a track oval of course.
I BELIEVE which of course means that I do nor know for sure that this box was used for a couple of other sets as well, namely numbers 3135 (Italian train set with loco 3035), 3214 (Swiss train set with loco 3014), 3134 (German train set) and may be also 3205 (steam loco 3005) train set.
The reason why I believe this is that there are five locomotives pictured on the box, the ones fitting the appropriate train sets. And I ONCE saw the Italian train set offered by an expert ollector / dealer with exactly this box, saying that it is a very rare box and is the original one for the set.
Regards,
Hans

Dear John,
and all who wanted a bigger pic of this:
This is going to take a little while, but I will not forget it. I tried to resize the original pic from the auction, but it didn't give a satisfactorily good result. I will have to shoot it again myself, also adding the side flaps, and we are still using a real camera, if you know what I mean.
Won't be THAT long though.
Regards,
Hans

Hi Guus,
short additional info: this box was shown in the 1969 catalog on page 6, and I suppose they used it even longer than that !!!

Hans

Fascinating topic!
I saw a reference above to being able to obtain replacement modern boxes from Marklin. I have a couple of unboxed engines which I would dearly like to keep in a proper Marklin box, but how does one go about obtaining them? Can I order them through someone like Lokshop? If so, how do I obtain the part numbers?
If anyone can supply answers I would be very grateful.

Here in Italy you must ask it to your dealer as "box for 37***"

Thanks Alberto.
Unfortunately the only Marklin dealer in Gibraltar closed 40 years ago!
I'll try emailing Lokshop.

I bought an old 3068 at my MMR dealer some days ago.
The drawing outside the box is a Belgian NoHAB, only a sticker indicates 3068
The box has the name "Knut" written on it.

I have this set with the SF F7, but unfortunately my box has not held up so well over the years. lots of tape on the corners.
my dad bought it for me in hong kong, around 1967.

hi,
Some months ago, my dealer sold me a 42080 coach in a box without bottom (see pic)
url=http://www.enregistrersous.com/images/2/107354802520070908142622.html][img]
explaining me M* was reducing costs!
M* France said it was the normal box for this item ...
Can anyone confirm this?
