Despite no sound nor special electronics, I think the Marklin HO 3071 is a really neat model.

I bought mine used but when stopped the front light does not have a steady beam of light (i.e. intensity varies). Any insights into what causes this phenomena and how to fix it? (Umm...can I just use positive thinking, garlic around my neck or meditate away the problem?)

One characteristic of the locomotive is that unlike the rest of what I have, which are digital and fairly recent, the motor in the 3071 really growls away and sounds almost like the old Lionel trains of days gone by. I'm assuming it is normal for it sound like my digital sound provided Schienenbus?

If it is analogue then the light behaviour is normal.. Even my delta increases in intensity the faster it goes..

Hi Larry

In my opinion, the best way is to convert to digital, using the old conversion set 60904. That way you can still achieve the directional change of the pick-up shoe.
I do not know if the directional change is possible with the new mfx decoders.

Edit: by the way, in this case you will need four wires through your train:
1: power supply from the rear pick-up shoe to the locomotive
2: power supply to interior light from the locomotive
3: power supply to rear end white lights from the locomotive
4: power supply to rear end red lights from the locomotive

If you don't need interior light you can stick to the two wires originally passing through the train:
1: power supply from the rear pick-up shoe to the locomotive
2: power supply to rear end white lights from the locomotive
In this case the rear red light is on all the time, fed directly from the rear pick-up shoe. I recommend to install a resistor, maybe 270 ohm, to reduce the light intencity. When driving in reverse direction, the white light is stronger than the red and even though they are both on, the light appeares to be white.
