Hi All,
I was wandering around my local train shop which happens to be a marklin importer. Most beautiful marklin engines but at mouthwateringly high prices. Also whilst intricate in detail they looked and felt incredibly fragile. Where are the old metal engines and rolling stock from the past that could take a few unscheduled trips to the floor or survive cat attack!
I appreciate that it is only big boys that can afford these trains but what about the next generation? I hope the new owners of Marklin will introduce a more basic but comprenhensive range of models. Untill then it is second hand for me.

Well, there is a change of policy at Märklin. If you look at the new catalogue from 2006, you will notice that it begins with really affordable items. They just should return the Primex or Hobby brand. See also for Primex —> http://www.frankenbahn.de/primex/primexframeE.htm |

Thanks that a great site for Primex. Another moan as far as I am concerned but I am sure you purists won't agree. That is the (scale) length of marklin express coaches at 10" plus. I think they look silly on small layouts when 2 coaches is about all the length of a train that you can run. I prefer the old 346 type coaches at 91/2" which look much better on small layouts.

I agree with you 100%.
The future of any hobby is in attracting children, and you can't let children play with a lot of the models currently on offer.
On the other hand Marklin does seem to be going the right way with the current cheaper range, but there is not much variety, other than numerous repaints of the same two locos.
Out of curiosity, which is your local Marklin shop? Is it Gaugemaster as David and Steven assume?

Hi Geoff, great idea of yours - PRIMEX was (and still is) one nice opportunity for low budget players / collectors. Most of their locos/cars are of excellent quality though some are lacking the detailing of their MARKLIN siblings ... There a new br81 and new version of the KLVM little steamengine. And the new V80 and another dieseltrain and of course the good old 3000 (30000). And there is more to come. |

Not only children are important for the hobby. But also their parents. And how many parents still have time left over for their children? I think it is a problem in this modern society that children aren't learn to play anymore.
An other group that Märklin is forgetting, are the people with not so much pocket money (count me in). I really depend on the affordable items offered by Märklin. And although it is not always exact to scale I have really much pleasure with this items. I hope that Märklin will return the Hobby or Primex brand, it was really a good alternative.
If I might do a few suggestions, is it possible to make the tipper car in another colour than red? Can the old cars return in the Hobby brand? Perhaps a few other variations on the frame of the 44## series. |

Primex will not return. The people who sold it have make their own product kaput.
But marklin will make more hobbylocs and may be some old models will make a comeback.

I think you get far more value for money with the new "Hobby-series" than you did with Primex. Simplified but functional models attracts more users and will be good for future sales. No need to introduce a separate brand, since all locos and cars should be able to use together anyway. Even an experienced user may want to buy a cheaper loco for simple tasks on the layout or for experimenting... |

Hey Robin. Yes, the Primex line was the discount program of the Märklin company and can be runed on märklin with out any problems. how ever most of the line was analog, so if you run digitaly then you have to update the models Philip |

The only thing missing now to make this set complete is the "Beiwagen", #4022.   About "value for money" of older vs. current Hobby models - IMHO it still depends unchanged upon the definition of value. My "value proposition" indicates that many of my both old and new, Märklin and PRIMEX models are still in the right place (admitted, this does not match for models like the Thomas or Hogwarts sets - but we all know the source of those models ). My "best" PRIMEX model for sure is the BR23, #3191. It was only issued in 1985 and, although not directly listed in the catalog there are several pages showing the model on a layout (at least in my version). PRIMEX was very correct at its time; now it would probably be a little bit difficult (also expensive) for Märklin to "recall" exact rebuilds of those models.

However, reviving PRIMEX (with certain models from still existing molds) would present the company with their own "Models of Yesteryear" or "Heritage Line", immediately. Not much of cash involved - but great for the image of the world's top maker of MRRs |

I think rebuilding the old models doesn't make sence, but that was not the intention of Primex. Primex was build to make model trains affordable and easy accesible. And I would much appreciate if it came back. |

I red somewhere that Märklin would launch a Primex model from time to time, to keep the brand name "alive".
30031 in 1996, 33005 in 2000, what's next? If there will be any next?
According to the same source (I cannot remember where and when I saw it), Primex was intended to be a cheap alternative to be sold e.g. in supermarkets and normal toy shops, while Märklin should be sold in specialized hobby/MMR shops. |

Hi all,
lots of second hand Primex seems to appear on auctions and fairs around Berlin at the moment. Most of it originaly packed and sealed by the factory. Prices are not too bad for some items. Thinking about getting some at the next fair if still available. |

Hi, you are right. But PRIMEX was used the last time last year when MÄRKLIN sold some remaining rails in their SCREEN-SHOP. They used the word "PRIMEX" and also the PRIMEX-label. So last time will be 2010 to renew the brand. Markus
