In my continuing quest to install RTS couplers on all my lighted coaches, i recently tried converting a 303390 bogie from a 40xx series coach to NEM pockets.
Here is the bogie before I started: [image]http://www.sem-co.com/~rschaffr/trains/images/bogie1.jpg[/image]
Here is the bogie disassembled: [image]http://www.sem-co.com/~rschaffr/trains/images/bogie2.jpg[/image]
Here it is with the coupler arm removed: [image]http://www.sem-co.com/~rschaffr/trains/images/bogie3.jpg[/image]
I drilled and tapped a 2mm threaded hole in the shank for attachment of the new coupler pocket (part # 288390). Here it is with the NEM coupler installed: [image]http://www.sem-co.com/~rschaffr/trains/images/bogie4.jpg[/image]

Hey, great work Ron. It works fine? What kind of screw did you use to fix the pocket?? |

I used a 2mm diameter screw from my parts bin. Had to cut it off for length. I have since bought some 2mm x .4 x 5mm length screws for this project (I have about a dozen or more bogies to convert) |

Does this actually work with the shortcouplings, even in S-curves? If it does, good idea.

Bart: Yes they do. (At least so far). I will report if I start having problems with them...I have only done one set so far.
MärCo: As I said, I want to install RTS current conducting couplers on all my lighted coaches. That is why.
Added: Bart: Your point is well taken. I think I will do more extensive testing on R1 curves and a variety of turnouts before I proceed. |

Wire through the none glazed windows on the end of the coaches ? It can be that simple.... Furthermore, the roof of the tinplate coaches can easely be removed. |

Can't uncouple them then, plus the wire is unsightly. Plus, the whole point of this project is to make them all interchangeable. I can couple these with any other car. That is why I stopped using the Viessmann ones. |

Ok. I coupled it with a standard close coupled car (from my Lufthansa Express set) and ran it through the gauntlet...R1 reversing (S) curves, across multiple points, even a double slip switch, and it tracked perfectly. No problems. I am pleased. |

Great idea ron. What brand are the coupler pockets you mentioned. They look similar to the marklin ones used on some of their locs. I'm thinking i might try this on some later model plastic coaches that i still have. rob.

Rob:
They are Marklin #288390. They are the NEM pocket with a tab with a hole in it for mounting. |

Did you detach the old coupler by breaking it off?
