I have a Marklin HO train set I got when I was a kid that my father imported from Europe. It has been sitting unused for 25+ years. The biggest box is a 3160, which is guess is a starter set, but other boxes I got later include a 3000 locomotive, 4043 passenger car, 4611 crane, 4914 low-sided truck, 3060 locomotive and 7192 crossing, etc. also there's alot of extra tracks and switches.

I have tried checking e-bay ocassionally, but the model numbers I have don't seem to pop-up very often. A few years ago, a local train store offered me $200 for everything, but today I saw one locomotive I have sell for U$129, so I was obviously being low-balled. I found a book at Amazon but it was from 1989 and cost U$75.

Is there a current standard reference book or website where I can figure out what this stuff is worth, or a reputable appraiser? I just need a basic idea to figure out if its worth it to sell pieces individually, or as a complete set. How much time I would need to catalogue and then go through the whole e-bay process is a consideration. What would be the best way to sell this set as we could use the space... Thanks for any input.

Welcome to the forum Andy! The koll's book is a very good starting point. Their values maybe on the high side but good.
Some libraries have copies or check a hobby store near you that carries European train products.. Where are you located?

I would like to know what the 3160 starter set is and how it looks like ... I guess it is in one of my catalogues, but I don't have time right now to look through all of them. Maybe you could just desribe to content in short sentences, thank you ....

You see John, I always suspected you law enforcement guys liked to trigger information from others and not do research work yourself ....[}:)][}:)][}:)]

Now, your remark got me diving deep into old catalogs and guess what I found ??? 3160 starter set. CoolCoolCool

If you tell me by tomorrow night in which catalog I have found it and how it looks like (don't tell me it's M-track 5100, that doesn't count, I want the loco and the cars that were included), you will get 6 bottles of fine Bavarian beer sent to your house.

Is this an offer ???? Good challenge ?? That will teach you to just enter "3160" in the Google machine or Märklin's data base..... biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

The others are excluded. They may help but in no way am I sending out thousands of bottles to you guys ... [:p][:p][:p]

Many regards,

Hans

Seriously, I never googled my above result (our Swedish friends do much better with this one). No, it was good old research in my Koll. Interestingly, he mentions NO starter set bearing that number - only the above Electric, sorry. Just look by yourself ... Smile

And don't forget to pay air freight in advance - browsing through books makes us especially thirsty [:p][:p][:p]

John,

this is about the first time I have ever heard or read the words "cheap" and "Bavarian beer" put into one sentence ... [:p][:p][:p]
You're always welcome to stop by and try it out, just as thousands of your compatriots do every year at the Oktoberfest München. winkwinkwink

In the 1960's Marklin often numbered train sets according to the number of the locomotive in it with either 100 or 200 added to it.

For example:
Loco 3000 - a class 89
Set 3100 - set with a class 89 loco and passenger cars
Set 3200 - set with a class 89 loco and freight cars

The starter set 3160 was a freight set with a 3060 loco. Is that enough of a clue?

Dear John,

this reply took some time, due to me technical idiot having to a) borrow a digital camera and b) rehearsing around with it .... As already mentioned by Ray, these starter sets had numbers according to the normal locos' numbers. See my effort with the digital camera, catalog is from 1961.

UserPostedImage

Now concerning your remark re Koll's: in the introduction of the Startpackungen / Zugpackungen part of this book, he mentions that it has been shown in the past that prices for starter sets can be obtained by simply adding up the included single items' prices. Therefore starter sets which only consist of regular Märklin material are not mentioned.....

About the beer: I'll either be over at your place in the not too far future, or maybe I have a chance of meeting up with Ron who's about to go to Germany for the Munich exhibition. Anyway there will be some beer at your place, just a little patience is needed ....

Many regards,

Hans

Not so much, Steven ..... Accumulated prices for the single items plus maybe a little extra for the box, if it is the one with the picture and not a single red one ....

I don't know, maybe 200 Euro, maybe 250 Euro .... certainly not more .... (Mint in Box, that is ...)

Hi guys,
I think the value actually may be much more depending on condition. True the individual components don't add up to much, but lately amongst seasoned Marklin (and especially Lionel) collectors the fun new thing to buy is Original Boxed sets in great condition, particularly premium sets (read: without 3000, 3001, 3003 etc...)Due to the fact that rarely are these sets intact and complete, and especially with their boxes. With higher end pieces, it also eliminates a lot of questionable seller marketing (such as pieceing together 3 348 series SBB coaches of different variations from different places and selling them as an original set)as if it is a complete original set you are very likely getting the proper components.
