Marklin Shrinkage
Found news from Model railwats express magazine online said ''Märklin has announced at a company meeting that it has sold Werk 3 on the Holzheimerstrasse. Also that the museum, training areas and warehouse will be moving to Werk 1 on the Stuttgarterstrasse by the end of September.
Werk 1 is the original (and very large) main factory, which was like a morgue when our correspondent visited early in May. Most European production had been relocated to the Trix factory in Nuremburg, Sonneberg in East Germany and Gyor in Hungary.
Werk 3 was a modern facility which was effectively the company HQ as well as housing the museum and warehousing, but was seriously under utilised. For the last couple of years the staff car park has been very lightly used and has been opened to museum visitors.
This does suggest that Marklin may be in some difficulty, as the considerable amount of money that has been spent on the museum in Werk 3 over the last few years (a complete refurbishment, two or three years ago, and a substantial improvement in security after the break-in early this year) was wasted. Sadly this move is also likely to reduce the number of visitors to the museum, as visitor car parking at Werk 1 is virtually non-existent.''

Consolidation for Marklin, should be viewed as a positive. If it reduces overhead and makes for more effiecient production it will help their bottom line. As we are all aware M may be outsourceing more and more production. If they keep the quality up it will be a positive move. Stephen(USA) |

Really the whole transaction sounds completely different when reading Märklin's press statement:

Really the whole transaction sounds completely different when reading Märklin's press statement:
Maerklin Museum back "at home"
Moving into the Experience World
The up to 200,000 visitors annually of the Maerklin museum will be offered a lot more in the future. Maerklin furnishes a Maerklin Experience World at the headquarter site in Goeppingen and thereby fulfills one of the demands of many visitors to get even closer to the emergence of the Maerklin products.
Maerklin faces itself to this demand. "We want visitors to experience the Maerklin Myth and offer more than just at historical overview" said Paul Adams, the chairman of the Maerklin management.
The visitors shall not be only passive spectators, but active parts, if they wish to do so. That can be done from co-operation on the visitors' layout and will extend to the assembly of your own self-made model railway carriage. The view into production will be part of the museum attendance in the future. At the current location this could only have been achieved through heavy financial expenditure and large logistic power.
The relatively modern and sober looking "Work 3" weakens the myth rather then strengthening it. Until 1978 the Maerklin museum was accommodated in the Maerklin headquarter in Stuttgarter Strasse. Established in 1900 as sample rooms for customers, in the course of decades it became open to the general public. Finally the sample rooms became the official company museum in 1957 . With the removal of the administration into Holzheimer road it found its place and was constantly developed further.
Increasingly however, limits appeared, which were in the way of a advancement for the future. Besides this the space requirements of Maerklin logistics are larger than available at the past location Holzheimer road. In 1979 stock and dispatch departments had to take care of 740 catalog articles, today it is 2,120, thus being nearly three times as much. That shows that the premises for a modern logistics are not sufficient. Paul Adams: "We must create possibilities for necessary expansion in quantity and quality to be carried into the future".The Maerklin Museum returns to its place of origin to the headquarter at Stuttgarter Strasse.
The salient building, which stands at the entrance of the city, more like a tower gate of Goeppingen, will offer ideal ambience for the presentation of past and present and will underline and strengthen the myth, which stems from the brand and its products.

I enjoyed the museum when we visited December of 2003. Yes, the layout at Merklingen is impressive, but we are going to visit Miniature Wonderland in Hamburg this December. I am really looking forward to that. Have allocated a full day for it. |
