Need some help with a locomotive I just bought used but in very nice condition. The engine runs smoothly and will also creep along well too. The problem is that at a point just above 1/2 throttle it will suddenly lurch up to speed. None of my other engines have this problem using the same transformer. I also checked the transformer with a VT/VM. Smooth voltage increase throughout the dial. What I have done so far: - taken out armature inspected; good properly seated brushes and clean commutator. - lightly lubed and cleaned gears and axle shafts (they were already very clean but dry). Without the armature installed I also turned the drive gear. No binding, very smooth. Engine: 3085 003 131-0 (age unknown) Conditions: M-Track, screwed down, four passenger cars. Problem still occours (to a lesser extent) with no cars attached.
I would appreciate any suggestions or recommendations any of you might have.
Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom,
Just wondering, does the same happen when you lay the loc on its side, and apply the power directly to it?

I will give it a try. Why do you think it would be important to test it that way?

If you take it of the track, and it still exhibits the same problem, you at least know the problem is inside the locomotive (not related to dirty or poor track), and that the power pick-up by wheels/shoe is fine.
