Hi;

Looking for some insight on Marklin's BR18. To the best of my limited knowledge, I found three versions of the BR18 that are slightly older: 3518, 3618 & the 3318. Looking to find out what the differences are and which one I should get, if any....

thanks for any help you can give me.

The difference in the versions by catalogue number is that one is digital, another has high-efficiency propulsion (the 3500-series), and the last has Delta or conventional operation. I picked up the digital version--sans a few parts on the boiler--for a pretty good price, but its running is sometimes spotty if it is changed between analogue and digital operation.

Thanks for the very quick follow up. Sounds like the high propulsion one is the one to get. I am assuming that the other non-digital models will not run at all on a digital layout. Any difference in performance between the three? Difference in details? They look exactly the same to my untrained eye.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Jeff,

Please note: the 3500 series, although it has a 5 pole armature it hasn't got a permanent magnet, so the voltage is still AC and not DC going through the motor.
The 3600 series are digital but again AC and a 6080 decoder.
Delta locos (33xx) can run on digital but have restricted access (1-80 loco numbers)

I've just done a conversion for a member (high efficiency motor conversion set), it can be done but there is a scale of difficulties involved in it all depends how much experience you've got in trying to do it.

The 3318 in question here is analogue, not Delta.
Most Delta decoders are limited to 15 addresses out of 80 (80 addresses accessible with a soldering iron).

The three models are BR 18.4. Märklin also made BR 18.1 and BR 18.3 in H0.

Hi Pink Panther (Nevw), indeed there are some foreign versions in Entente livery, such as models for Belgium in brown (NMBS/SNCB) and France in green (ETAT, NORD, SNCF), the latter even with deflectors. For information and pictures, please have a look at my ModelsList.
These versions are based on the 'simple' 3091/3093 versions with AC-propulsion.

Frits,
I have a 3111 now converted to Digital, as well as the Marklin MFX model 37184.

Not fond of any of the S 3/6 variations when they started their roll-out in 1978, now somehow I have most of them:

3092 S 3/6 3673 2'C1'h4v
3093 18 478 2'C1'h4v
3618 18 434 2'C1'h4v
3091 231 981 2'C1'h4v
3111 59 80 2'C1'h4v

Guess they're not without their charms. [Incidentally, most digital locomotives will work just fine on analogue layout; some will not have headlights available though.]

Hello

3318 is analog
3518 is also analog, but with 5 stars engine
3618 is digital, but with c80, that means only light function and no choice to adjust speed or inertia

Today's fotoshoot gave me the opportunity to shoot the Märklin 3083 ETAT Saintes (with black gear construction) at my dealers.
