Hi,

after cleaning out some stuff from my build in wardrobes I came across my Berliner railcar.
I thought I sold it several years ago and got a surprise when it was behind all my Märklin Magazine book folders.

So there goes another digital conversion in the near future.

That's good news, John!

I've always like those classic tinplate railcars.

I had not realised this was MArklin. I have only seen it in the background of pictures of layouts.
Is it the Berlin U bahn? When did Marklin make it?

To be precise, it is a Primex production.

It was produced from 1987 and it was offered in the Marklin program under the Hobby version 3128/4187.

That's not quite accurate, John. After Marklin stopped producing models under the Primex label, some of the range was brought back into the main Marklin catalogue.

The Primex 3017 coninued from 1991 to 1994 as Marklin 3128.

Hi John,

The conversion to digital is a liitle bit tricky because of the LEDs used. I would suggest you to bus a second middle-car, then you have what is called a "half-train". Two of these units together made a 8-car "full-train".

You should also think about a second slider on the non-motorized-end and a decoder which can switch the slider.

Regards

Markus

Markus,

I've just bought another middle-car,

I can't see any problems with the Led's

I have to think about the second slider because of my wiper contact tracks.
I'm in the process of constructing a new way of making contact with the trains wheels to do away with the wiper contact tracks by installing a short track inside to the main track, e.g. like you see on turnouts.

There is another 4 unit train on ebay for Euro 135.00, its not a bad price,, I've paid for the extra carriage almost Euro 30.00

regards.,

John

Hi John,

The five or six LEDs on every side are mounted together with some diodes and resistors on a single circuit-board. With traditional AC-supply they are switched by the diodes depending on the direction of the current. This won't work after converting to digital without modifing the circuit-boards.

That LED-problem is not insolvable but not usual at all for Marklin-models from the 1980s.

Markus

Markus,

thanks for the tip.
I have to have another look because I had a 6080- digital decoder in it and I can't remember having any problems with it unless I've changed the circuit-board 3 or 4 years ago,

I just looked at the circuit-board and can only see 4 resistors and 2 connection for ordinary plugs.
I agree with you regarding having Led's in locos especially Primex around this era.

regards.,

John

Date of production Primex 3017 - 1987-89 and Marklin 3128 - 1991-94 (Ray was correct).

Do you have the 4019 extra for 3017?

Thank you so much to ypou all for finding this wonderful S-bahn for me.
Unfortunatly, I'll go soon on holidays in the south of France,
and I won't order anything now that can be delivered when I'm not home.

Hoping this train wil still be available after my return,
and hoping I'll have some money left..

Joël

I will be updating my progress with the S-Bahn railcar later to night.

1.)
Digital conversion

The digital conversion consists of a 60903 conversion set.
A ball bearing will be fitted into the brush plate

2.) Interior lights

Led's will be used for the interior lights and as mentioned before the head & taillights have already been provided with led's.
I will have a led's going through the middle of the carriage as per picture

3.) Roco 4 pin electrical coupling

I was slightly annoyed not being able to separate the carriages from each other (permanent coupling, so this gave me an opportunity to install Roco 4 pi9n electrical couplings,
The 4 pins are ideal for the purpose
1.) blue wire: neutral
2.) white wire: front or rear lights
3.) yellow wire: front or rear lights
4.) Aux 1: green wire: interior lights

the fixed coupling was removed and than I had to come up with an idea how to fix the Roco coupling.
My first attempt was by adding a small double brass plate and fixed it to the current screw hole.
The motorcar, this was a different story as there is no room to extend the coupling.
I had to cut off the clip from the Roco coupling, cut off the loophole of the shaft coupling.
To make sure the loophole from shaft is firmly fixed to the Roco coupling I added again a brass plate, drilled a hole the size of the loophole and than super glued the brass plate onto the loop hole and the Roco coupling.
I was pleased with the end result, looks like it is permanently glued on.
I've retained roughly the same distance between the carriages.
The only thing I've altered on the carriage is the bottom cross bar holding the original coupling bar.
the coupling moves freely from side to side so sharp curves should not be a problem.

When its all finished (more photos) will follow

regards.,

John
