What prices are Marklin's Ontario Northlander going at? I have seen one in very good condition advertised at $1400.00 Canadian. It is tempting, but I think I would rather go to Goppingen in September!

For the 37500 Northlander, even for the older model it is a lot of money. You can find the 37500 model for about 500-600 euro on www.ebay.de if you have patience and choose the right seller.

Which Northlander is it?

There's the original (analogue) 3150 from 1978. This one is listed in the current Koll's at 1,060 Euros, and you may be able to get one for around 1,200-1,500 Euros in almost-new condition, assuming you are buying in Germany. I don't know what values would be in North America.

Then there's the "Northlander II", which is the Digital version with the F7 loco, that was made in 1998. These are more plentiful, and seem to be fetching around 500 Euros. Koll's lists these at 465 Euros.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your help. This is the version with the F7. From the ad it is digital with some sounds, horn, bell, and lights.. It includes an oval of track, and a MS 1.
Sounds like I shall keep my ticket to Goppingen.

Hi all.
From available information on the internet I see that 7,000 of the Northlander 37500 sets were made.
5,000 were for sale in Germany and 2,000 for export.
Is it possible to determine if a particular set is from the German or Export batch and how ?
Anybody know ?

Regards, Colin.

Is there any difference between the sets for Germany and the sets for the other countries?

No, I don't know, but I have two 37500 sets that happen to have consecutive serial numbers below 2000, and both were bought in the UK.

Thanks for the replies.

I have seen a couple of these sets in the UK and both were numbered below 2000 as in Nigel's reply.
All the ones for sale on the German Ebay site where the serial number is given are above 2000 which seems to suggest that export versions were numbered below 2000.

Hi Alan,

That's interesting! But, do you know where your set was originally sold?

And does the loco have the number 4948 etched on its underside too?

Best wishes,

morning

hi nigel

I have no idea where it was originally sold
I bought at auction a while back

yes it does have 4948 etched on the bottom in white
it also has the number H8 120686 stamped in orange on the bottom

hope its not a ringer

I don't know why I buy railcars
they are much to complicated for me to connect
I think its the thrill of winning the auction

Hi Alan,

Seems fine to me, just a shame the certificate is missing. From the bits of evidence in this thread, I would think that the set originally started life in Germany.

I agree that connecting these is a bit fiddly as with all the sets derived from the 3070/3071 TEE models. It's the electrical plugs and sockets, plus the little levers that provide the mechanical connection between the coaches.

More recent designs of railcars are a bit better, but still require very careful handling!

Best wishes,

Nigel

1998 is the production year, not the count of certificates.

I have just bought these two sets from a seller in Germany. They are on the way now.

Should I put them in a display case or get the necessary track and power supply to run them here (in Canada).

If I run them, where can I get the right power supply?

(I have liked trains all my life, but never owned a model set, thought I might as well start with a good one. :))

Thank you very much for your help.

You started with two great sets.If you want to run the trains you must go to a marklin dealer in Canada and buy a digital controller and tracks,or a new starter set.The starter set is a good solution, you will buy a new train, tracks and controller for a fair price. But be careful, there is no medicines for marklin disease.Wellcome to the forum, greetings from Greece.LOL BigGrin

The easiest thing to get started may be to buy a Marklin starter set that comes with Mobile Station (cheaper) or Central Station (more expensive), depending on your pricepoint. This way you get some form of digital control, power supply and track all in one bundle. There are quiet a few good starter sets this year, but availability will probably end up being the driver. It will be easiest to run these on Marklin track, they will not easily transfer to a two rail format (more common in US and Canada).

If you happen to be near the West Coast of Canada, Euro Rail Hobbies is pretty good...otherwise I am sure others may be able to give you a good local recommendation for dealer with stock on-hand.

Hmm, another export version below serial number 2000.
Maybe all export versions were below number 2000 as suggested.
