I understand Märklin used to call some products 'primex' but what does it mean? A more exclusive line or what?

No, a less detailed, cheaper, simplified line sold in department stores and the like. A good way to still sell older stock and reach a wider audience. Very much like the Hobby line is today. They also sold a slightly different (visually) line of M-track. The last Primex product released was, I believe, the 33005 BR 23. A nicer version of the 3005 but with darkened wheels and a delta decoder. Plastic gears though.

Cheers, p.

Hi Hannson,
Primex were Maerklin trains marketed under this
name and I believe it stood for prime-ex-Maerklin items
which were already discontinued in the main catalog.
Basically reissued items under a different name. In the
'90's the name was changed to the Hobby line which
you can still see in the main catalog. Primex used
to have its own catalog too.
