I have recently purchased some 2nd hand K track which has a quantity of M2271 points along with some M2273 points . The only difference I can see is some have a mechanical frog whereas others have a solid frog. The 2273 box's have a sticker placed over the original printed # of 2271 ,but the contents still have the same 2271 imprinted on the sleepers or ties . Possibly there has been the wrong left & right handed points put in to the wrong box but I have not come across any stamped 2273 yet .

Is there any obvious differences between 2271 & 2273 points ?

Thanks in advance ,
Tom in Oz.

Hi Tom,

In the past (more than 20 years ago), the 2271 was a boxed set composed of a 2271 Left turnout and a 2271 Right turnout.
Then, for various marketing reasons I suppose, Left and Right turnouts were available separately, but without changing the box and adding a sticker over the "old" reference (2271). The marking on the turnout has always been "2271" for L or R turnout.

So 2272 = 2271 Left, 2273 = 2271 Right;

New references today are 22715 (L) and 22716 (R) and are sold one piece by one piece. These new turnouts have no mobile heart, as the old ones had.

Cheers
Fabrice

22715 and 22716 appear in the 2000/2001 catalog.

Old 2272 and 2273 were removed 2 or 3 years after.

Hi Does anyone have experience ballasting the 2271 turnouts with the moveable frog? I was looking at them yesterday and it seemed to me that the moving pieces extend over a large area of the switch and therefore a lot of areas to avoid when ballasting.

Cheers

The best trick here is to leave a cavity under the turnout for any loose ballast to fall into so it doesn't jam the plastic piece that moves the tongue in the frog. If the cavity can have a hole right through the base board that will be even better because then it gets rid of the loose bits completely.

Also by having the cavity the moving piece won't jam on the base board.
