Hi

I'm new to Marklin and was wondering if it was possible to use transformer 6646, which I got with a start up set with mobile station two. Or do I need a new transformer?

Thanks

Hi!
Do you have a 6646 (120 V) or a 6647 (230 V)?

The MS2 can be used with 16 V AC, but the 6646/7 will be too weak if you run several trains and may suddenly switch off.

Better buy the MS2 with the appropriate 36 VA power supply.

Hi camcath,

I use and can recommend using a 6002 52VA transformer with the MS2. I used this with the MS1 before upgrading to the MS2.
The standard 36VA power supply which comes with the MS2 is IMO not sufficient. The output track voltage was around 18V, and loco's equiped with sound & smoke units, the smoke units barely gave any smoke at all. I did not have this problem with MS1& 52VA transformer.
With the 6002 52VA transformer, the track voltage was now around 21V, and loco's smoke as as they should.
I normally run up to 3 digital sound Loco's, and even when 3 are steam loco's with smoke units, they all have good smoke output.
I can easily run 4-6 sound loco's on the MS with out any problems.

Regards,
Brian.

Sorry to bump up an old thread but I have checked my 66361 and it says that the output is 18V DC. If I check my 6002 it says 16V AC. So my question is how is it possible to provide either DC or AC to the 60113 unit that comes with the MS2, or did I perhaps miss something in the thread ? The output of my 66361 seems insufficient to change my 7039 signals when using a 6083 decoder so was wondering if, after cleaning up the signals, the better power supply would solve the issue. I can however run up to 4 loks without any issues.

Thanks in advance.

Tim

Hi, Tim!
The MS2 needs DC. There is a rectifier in the 60113, so it can also be used with AC.
With 16 V AC the track voltage will be higher. Maybe that makes a difference with your 7039.

Thanks for the reply. That does make sense then but just wanted to be 100% sure. Given that DC has a positive and negative lead how would this translate to the output of the 6002 (Yellow / Brown) ?

AC has positive and negative - and they swap 100 or 120 times a second. Sometimes yellow is plus, sometimes it's minus.
With AC it basically does not matter where plus is.

Brown is ground, yellow is live wire.

Ok just tried it and everything works perfectly. The 7039 via the 6083 changes 100%. Much appreciated.
