Dr, D., Thanks for that, what a great way to spend a day, here is another one for you - a Big Boy this time.

Jeremy.

The link below is to a 7.1/4" line which is near to me in the U.K. Midlands.
It is at Kingsbury Water Park and runs lots of interesting stock as you will see from the photos.
I sometimes cycle there on nice days.
Click on the "Standard W/E 2012" or other menu items at the top to see the photos.
At least two Garratt locomotives visit the line and I have also seen a photo of a Big Boy or Challenger but I cannot find the link.

Hope you find it interesting.

In my hometown one can find a big layout for that type of trains.
They call it modelrailroad, but you can sit in the cars for a ride.

In the summer they operate every day and on Sundays a much larger piece of track is open in a very beautiful park. With a nice station and so on.

1 round takes 15 to 20 minutes on Sunday, on other days only 3 minutes on a small layout
You see mostly kids but also lots of fathers and grandfathers who like the smell of steam and oil.
One can see 7 or 8 different steamloco's and 2 diesels.
I go there every Sunday with my kids for a ride or to watch only.
A 20 minute ride on these little trains is super relaxing.
I will make some photos tomorrow if the weather is OK.

For me, the ultimate 'ride-on' train would be a Gauge V (just under 5" / 120mm) Marklin-made train from the early 1900's.

It was discussed in this thread last year, I have some additional photo's giving perspective to the size but they are on my PC in transit.

If ever I was to join a Model Engineers Society, and had the opportunity to make (or have made) my own ride-on Loco & Wagons, it would surely be a replica of this famous "Gardiner Family" train.

No doubt it would probably still cost at least half as much to re-make as the original set sold for at auction.

Cheers

Steve

PS, for those in NZ, I was dismayed to have a wander around the Wanganui Model Engineers property where it seems their outdoor railway is completely overgrown and unused for several years. The club rooms are still there but I was not there at a time when it was open so I don't know how active the club still is.

The landscape is still quite clear in Google Maps (satellite image) shown below..... (the clubrooms are reference "70A")

Hi all,

Yesterday I promised some photos of the modeltrains where you can ride in.
The layout is in the "Zuiderpark" (South Park!) in THe Hague - Holland.
The Gauge is 7 1/4 inch.
As I said yesterday, in the Summer the trains operate every day, a ride takes about 15 - 20 minutes in a very beautiful and typical Dutch park. Everybody have lots of fun, the volunteers, the children, the fathers and grandfathers, mothers...it is so enjoyable there. There is a medium size LGB layout to.
Some of the volunteers have a Marklin layout at home (maybe all, but I don't know them all).

(The photos are of this afternoon).

Marco
