During the last Stammtisch of the Hellenic M* Club I first saw the Maerklin 6070/6071 Infrared Control Units which were put out of production in 1994. These were neat devices and we played a lot with other members controlling 3 different locs on my layout with two 6071s and a 6021 Control Unit.
I tried to look for used 6070/6071 on Ebay but there is none offered whatsoever. Does anybody have experience with these devices b/c I am seriously thinking in purchasing a pair of them as I think they would be a great addition to my layout (pls. keep in mind that I do not intend to abandon 6021-6036-6040-6043-6051 digital configuration soon!).
Also can anybody indicate where I could find these things?

I have the 6070/6071 but sold last two years ago due to changing over to CS.

It is now rare items and price for pair look to be around 300 Euros or more!

One 6071 found on ebay (but dont have paypal).

Uhlenbrock 64820 has the same functionality, plus much more.

Any IR. While functional, has the inherent "line of sight" issues.

If you are after a wireless solution, the ESU "Mobile Control" is RF based and worth a look.

Personally I hate the "Enter" process of pressing the thumb wheel but otherwise it is better than both the mentioned IR options.

That said ESU have also announced the "ECOS Control Radio" so it is hoped Marklin will not be too far behind

IR is also one way only (simplex); radio allows for duplex. Doesn't matter for systems that don't allow for several controls to adress the same loco though. I prefer spiral cable before IR for that reason; which also omits the battery issue. But unfortunately 6021 doesn't allow for any hand held control at all. However, with the Uhlenbrock 64820 the LocoNet worlds opens up as well...

The problem that I found with the ESU mobile control is that it does not work if you have a 6050/6051 interface. Works great with IB, however.

Lars, Do you mean 63820 - "6021-Infrared & LocoNet-Adapter" ?

Yes. 64820 is a set which combines the 63820 and a IR throttle.

The Marklin IR 6070/71 if used in a controlled invironment such as a private relatively small train room has no significant line of sight issues. The IR "bounces" and is very useful. In a very large room, or out of doors, the LOS issue is present. A drawback to the 6070 is the simplex issue where one has two or more operators trying to control loks simultaneously.

I think it is poor seller and high price. The 6070/6071 never have any problem.wink
