For a whole lot of reasons I'll be going with Marklin sectional track (mostly). Are there any practical alternatives to their uncoupling track (#8587)? All of the layout will be within relatively easy reach.

Thanks in advance....

ozzman,

The short answer is no. The long answer is, if you change couplers to Kadee z scale couplers, yes. With the Kadees you can use any number of magnets. The conversion can be a real pain. Sticking with stock M couplers, their uncoupling track works the best. I even find it difficult to uncouple them by hand. It seems they were designed to uncouple if you lift a car straight up but that's about it - and that's not very prototypical.

Manfred Joerger has created an electro-magnetic uncoupling system for Marklin couplers. It involves adding little crescent-shaped metal tabs to the bottom of the couplers, and an electromagnet embedded underneath the track.

http://www.system-joerger.de/html/entkupplung.html

(I've no experience with the system myself)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses. As far as the trains themselves are concerned I'm an "operate out of the box" man, other than a bit of weathering. Which means that I'll stick with the Marklin uncoupling track.

Hi Gary: why not use both? There is an outfit that sells an out of the box marklin/mtl coupler equipped box car. I intend to install marklin's uncoupler & Mtl's under track magnet in the same spur(s)I can post the web site for if your interested.

Thanks Tom, I'd appreciate it if you could post that url. I'm like you - more questions than answers, but that's the way you find things out. And, the members here seem genuinely ready to help.

try "zscalemonster.com" & check out the Microtrains page of Locos & Freightcars. Hope this helps. By the way the guy who runs the Biz is also a z fan. Willing to answer your questions(in a while). Very little Marklin products but has a slew of stuff, I mean A LOT of stuff for sale. Tom

Z scale uncouplers : Marklin, Manfried Jorger , RokuhanR077 all work with the Marklin couplers. I had limited succes with the Marklin uncoupling track. I have 100% succes with Manfried Jorger system which i am now using with LenzLS150 decoder. I have not tried the Rokuhan R077 yet butit looks lik it will work.

I used to exhibit Z gauge layouts way back in the eighties so lifting stock bodily upwards wasn't really an option.
I found the Marklin uncoupling tracks worked pretty well and reliably.
If I had to uncouple anything by hand I found that using a pointy object such as a cocktail stick and stabbing one of the couplings downwards worked well. As you pushed it down the two couplers would spring inwards one over the top of the other so they didn't couple up again when you withdrew the stick. The two items of stock would then sit there still in position but not coupled. Not very prototypical but better than actually grabbing hold of the coach or wagon and it was the best I could come up with.
Marklin HO using M track. Now reverted to analogue as I find it has more character - and I understand it!

I am using Micro Train Lines magnetic couplers and the uncoupling process is very easy with some small neodymium magnets. See this video for demonstration:

Thanks. I've looked around a bit.
I ve seen them too indeed. It's something I am contemplating.

For that Jorger system you basically add a small metal in the marklin hook. An electromagnet is then activated to open the twee couplers.
This should be possible to install in a DIY way.

Converting to MTL couplers on the other hand would be more esthetical pleasing too.
The Jorger system isn't widely produced as the mtl stuff..
