After a long wait (since April) the 37038 arrived Monday. It looks good, but seems to have some operating issues. It doesn't have much power and hangs up with wheels spinning on 2% grades and even on flat track.

It may be that the drivers aren't all making good contact with the rails (especially the traction tires on the first set of drivers.)

I'm debating whether to send it back (for out-of-alignment drivers) or to only operate at higher than normal speeds to have enough momentum to bypass any perceived trouble spots. My other engines don't seem to have any traction problems.

Jeff, a few suggestions (I have a 37030):

1. The center driver is sprung, make sure it travels freely (vertically). It shouldn't take any noticeable pressure to push it to the top position.
2. Make sure the slider is adjusted according to the instructions in the manual. Out of the box, it will be putting WAY too much pressure on the center rail.
3. Let it break in a bit more after checking the above.

All that said, it will never be able to pull a truly heavy train (like the metal Rheingold cars for example).

Maybe adding more traction tires might help as well. wink
