Ivan,

Welcome to the forum. GG1, as anyone here will tell you, is one of the top Marklin models, very impressive performer indeed. You can't go wrong!

Currently modeling Era 3 DB. When I decide to create a US layout, GG1 is definitely on the list of US locos to have! Cannot say much about the performance but just looking at it, the GG1 is a very impressive model!

I also think that the GG1 has a good repair record to date. I don't recall anyone complaining about faulty speakers or decoders or other problems. What you want to avoid is having to return the model back to Maerklin and not knowing how many months it will take it get it back. This can be very disconcerting especially given what these models cost and the complete loss of use of the loco during that time. There are also several dealers that have very reasonable and competitive prices and good service.

I can confirm. Smile

Its sound generator is also one of the very best that Märklin has put in a locomotive.

You cannot miss with this beauty - pretty strong and a puller. It has the same motor as the Big Boy and it is pretty good !!

No problems at all for this one.

I am really impressed with my 37490 GG1. The weight is impressive and performance likewise. The forms of this classic locomotive are also stunning. Don't have the tuscan red version but I would probably buy it as well.

As far as USA prototypes go, my favorites are the EMD and the GG-1. If I were to start a US layout, the first lok on would be my AT&SF F7, however I would immediately buy a GG-1. They are beautiful. If you have not seen one in the flesh (steel?) you should. The real thing is a monster!

I bought the Z-gauge GG-1 for my Grandson, but it can just barely pull itself around the layout. I added 3/4 oz of lead (all I could fit in) to it to give it some mass and it does OK, but still not a real puller.

When i got my first GG-1 it had a faulty decoder or something like that, it was the 37490, i returned it to my dealer and he said to me, either you will wait until is fixed (warranty) or you will get the silver one, 37491 which i have now, i might get the 37490 cause i like that colour of it very much.
It is an excellent loco.
I am hoping for a nice livery of the set that will have it.

Welcome to the forum Ivan,

It is one of the most impresive models alongside the Big Boys that Märklin has ever made! Hope the trends continues.

Do most of you who are running the GG1 have the overhead wires?
Did the original have a diesel engine as a backup?
Just seems if you are going to run the GG1 you should have the overhead wires, but that is a big commitment.

Thought?
I'm trying to convince myself to buy one, even though I don't have the overhead wires.

I can only fully confirm this! It runs very smoothly(much power), the sound is ok. I love this model. It is one of those models you "should have" in your M collection, even on an European layout.

Must admit that I don't like the look of it. Again this has nothing to do with quality and features which are undoubtly first class - just the appearence. Not for my layout. wink

Dear Phillip,

The original GG-1 was a pure electric locomotive. It could only run under wires. The lack of wires has never stopped me from running any model of an electric locomotive, and as a Marklin fan it's pretty hard to avoid have electrics!

Run your model trains any way that makes you feel good.

I went the other way from ulf999 I happened to have been lucky enough to have extra resources when the Insiders edition of the Big Boy was released, I bought 2. When it became evident that Marklin had defiled the tradition of the Insiders edition by making the Big-Boy available to the general public, I opted to trade it to one of the new at the time GG1's One of our groups members traded me and I love the GG1. I wish that more American models had been available when I first started collecting my Marklins. I only have the Big Boy, th e GG1, a couple F7's in Santa Fe War Bonnet and my latest the Upee Light Mikado. The rest of the 100 plus locos in the round house are european. Not that that's bad, I love them all, it's just that I would have liked to model in trains that were more indiginous to the land I live in.

More U.S. stuff confused - a look at my galleries (LAYOUT FORUM, HO FORUM) might help, Thomas Smile
Sufficient to fill a small layout with. But you're right - it could be way more ...

Re your question: M's GG-1 is a super model that is highly recommended [:p][:p][:p]
And that brand new starter set #29490 oughta be one nice bargain Smile

I wish I had had that 'problem' (having two BBs). But with the new starter 24940 around the corner, I might once again have a GG in my possession.

Mike thanks sooooooo much for your helpful ways, i really enjoyed buying from you, trust me, you will see more of me and my money, i dont think i will buy elsewhere unless its an item that you may not have or ever get, i recommend your place anyday, anytime, period! If others here want a genuine person to deal with in MARKLIN products, Mike of EUROMODELTRAINS is it, i am soooo glad i found this site, without this site i would have never known about your shop, small but nice, and you get a personal feel about the place thats what i love. As far as the pics, i look like crap...LOL, but the loco is AWESOME, i will post some pics of it in about 1 hour, again MIKE, i cant thank you enough for your ways at that place, i mean any train i liked you were kind enough to put it on the test track and let it do its thing....One super happy customer!
