Maerklin's release of the 37613 double Southern Pacific PA-1 diesel looks to be a fantastic and realistic operating model.

With Maerklin's past releases of Union Pacific, Santa Fe and Rio Grande PA-1s it was fairly realistic for them to pull the aluminum streamliner cars produced by Maerklin. However, if one is to pay attention to reality, it would be unusual for anything but the Daylight paint scheme (red/orange/black) not to appear on passenger coaches pulled by this famous locomotive. I am also unaware of any Southern Pacific freight cars from Maerklin that could be pulled by the SP PA-1s.

While there are a number of US manufacturers who now offer quality level coaches in the Daylight paint scheme for DC operations that could be adapted to be pulled by the 37613, it would be ideal for Maerklin to come out with a line of Daylight coaches specifically for this purpose.

Anyone converted coaches to run with the PA-1s and any rumors on if Maerklin will produce Daylight coaches?

Thanks

the marklin extruded body US type passenger coaches, even if painted in daylight orange, are still no scale length (shortened just like the older german prototype coaches) and not really the correct type anyways.
the brass set I linked to before is more correct - it has at least one car set that share a set of trucks. I'm not sure of the name of this wheel arrangement, but it appears to be pretty unique to this SP train. it is probably no longer available through brass dealers, and is extremely expensive.
otherwise there are other brands that could be used - face it, unless they do a SP paint scheme on the extruded aluminum coaches, they will be plastic too, just like the rest of marklin's current range of freight or passenger cars, and everbody elses for that matter (unless you have big $ you are able to spend on brass).

Dear Larry,
You might review some of the conversions that Pierre Gillard has done with North American rolling stock to be Marklin compatible. The problem with correctly scaled cars is that 85 or 90 scale feet don't want to run easily on R1 curves.
It would be fine to run Union Pacific streamlined equipment behind the PA-1s, since they provided the power for the streamliner "City of San Francisco" west of Ogden Utah. Of course, there are no UP coaches from Marklin either, so my only suggestion might be to get out the yellow spray paint and some UP passenger decals.
Back in the metal freight car era (15 years ago or so), I believe that Marklin produced a Southern Pacific flatcar with a piggyback trailer as part of a set. The Pacific Fruit Express refrigerator cars are also SP appropriate, since these were co-owned with Union Pacific and bear the SP symbol. Since Union Pacific was a major eastern connection for Southern Pacific's "Overland Route", one would have seen many UP freight cars on this line. And since freight cars are freely exchanged amount North American railroads, it would be natural to see cars from other lines as well. Bigger questions are how often the PAs were used on freight trains, and what you can do for an SP caboose. I suppose that the use of passenger power on a fast eastbound train of refrigerated fruit and vegetables could be excused in rare instances. However, F units would have been more typical freight power than the PAs for the early 1950s.
At our house, the engines pull any rolling stock that my son chooses.
Jeff
