My introduction to Marklin has been my starter set 29186 -- and I must say I love the C track, overall quality of the product and the associated information about layouts. I am wondering about my locomotive performance...where should I be looking to get real slow speed and quiet performance? Is this where C-sine comes in? I notice my locomotive tends to jackrabbit start and change speed on curves, similar to what I found in regular O gauge AC, 3 rail operations, but nothing like my regular two rail DC in N and HO, where the locomotives could be made to crawl. What is my next logical step to get this performance?

Hi Bill,all,

>> I am wondering about my locomotive performance...where should I be looking to get real slow speed and quiet performance? <<

You have what is called Delta loks. They are notorious poor runners as they have only 3-pole motors.Digial loks (37XXX series) have 5-pole motors and decoders that truly regulate speed and momentum. It is like night and day.

>> Is this where C-sine comes in? <<

The C-sine loks(39XXX series) run superbly in either conventional of digital operation.

>>I notice my locomotive tends to jackrabbit start and change speed on curves

Märklin loks tend to run better after a breaking in period. In fact the more they run the better they run!
Make sure that the loks are properly oiled. Then on your oval at a medium speed run it forward then backwards for 20 minutes, then 30 minutes, then 1 hour.

Go digital! ;-)

I have to second that, as my little experience has shown with a 3 pole and a c-sine, they are night and day!!! and especially if you are running an electric prototype, the c-sine has a more realistic quiet operation.

I am in the process of converting my 3-pole 12X loc to a 5 pole with a digital decoder, and am 1/2 way done as I only ave the 5 pole in there but no permanent magnet or electronics so I will let you know how that goes when it finally gets done.

Good luck

Sam

Thanks for the responses. I did notice my little locomotive does seem to run better (slower speeds more easily attained) and quiet down also after leaving it on for a long period of time...just making its way around the track for a half an hour or longer. I guess I will start to explore digital ops and the locomotives with the C-sine motors too.

Remember to run it forward and reverse equally! You want to wear the motor brushes evenly.Make sure to properly oil(not too much) the motor

Good idea! :-)

Hey Kevin, Have you heard anything about break-in on C-sine? Or do those run the same from day one?

Thanks

The C-sine is brushless motor, thus according to Märklin maintenance-free.I have found that other than adjusting the accel./braking/max speed they run like butter right out of the shed,er,...box! ;-)

Sam,don't do that! :-) There is no guarantee that Märklin will produce a C-sine of all those models.
Even though the C-sine will fit where a 60901 will go,some loks might not have room for the electronics, which the C-sine needs in order for it to perform they way it does.

Don't worry, my 12X (limited issue 1859-1999 aniversary) Loc will never leave my hands. Although it my go C-sine, if Marklin makes that a possiblity.
