Hi, what decoder or decoder set is recommended for the 3094 Engine for smooth running. I find it is missing off most list for the 60904 kit. I am not sure why. Kent in Ca

Hi elseuth.

According to the spare part drawing, I think (but I am not sure) that the 60904/60924 will fit.

As far as I can see, yechnically speaking 3064 is identical to 3089.

3094 is unfortunately one of those (older) models where the 609x4 retrofit kit will not fit in most to probably all cases (this model was slightly redesigned over time and thus for newer versions - also associated with other product numbers - those kits may fit). Newer models of the BR03.10 which have been produced in the 90's are equipped with a DCM and thus a 609x1 kit is needed and will fit.

Possible alternatives for the older models are #66032 (not load regulated) or using the HAMO magnet and any suitable load regulated decoder.

elsleuth asked (in a pm): "I'm wondering if a c96 or a c80 decoder will work?"

Hi Kent,

c96: this is a pure function decoder and will not work.

c80: this was the first generation digital decoder; its current successor is the #66032 which I had mentioned in my earlier response. It will work - however, it takes more space than the #66032 and space could again be a problem, this time not with the motor parts but with the decoder. If you have already a c80, just try if it fits.

If I was about to do this conversion, I'd decide between the "low budget" solution with a #66032 or the more expensive one which gives a much better driving performance. ESU offers a complete conversion kit containing a LokPilot decoder and the corresponding HAMO magnet for a reasonable price. You would need #52630, containing the magnet #51960 (Märklin part #220450).

You can still get 60904 motor parts and Kuhn decoder as a set from a ebay shop. I've purchased some lately, two days to ship to HK.
You have to specify the rotor and motor cover thought.

Whoops , sorry, just find out 60904 cannot fit into 3094 (nor 3089).
Forget what I said.

66032 fits almost in every old locomotive. I have only 3 locomotives that has not them, because they were prefitted with other decoders from Märklin.
Absolutly AFB-NOHAB fan ;-)
