did marklin sold one for sure? I think it was a side discharged type one for sure but I might be wrong

this is from long-time-ago memory but one of the usa catalog year had a small photo showing what it looked lik in action (red diesel shunter holding a few of these cars on raised tracks and they were dumping) and the car in question was listed on same or at least adjacent page

Yes, there was a dischargable hopper car made by Märklin for years.
See: http://www.bahn.hfkern.d...er_selbstentlade_S2.html

The 4631 types are capable of automatic unloading by simply pushing a pin on the bottom of the car. (Preferably done automatically by a decoupler track)
Note that you'll need fine but heavy "coal" to have it unloaded properly. The gates through which the unloading process takes place are rather small.

Not Märklin, but the 4-axeled ErzIII car from Fleischmann also unloads, using a special track-piece.
The trackpiece must be adapted, but the system can be used with M.

Here is a picture from the 1969 F* catalog (Danish) showing the special track piece.

Thanks Benny!
Seeing how simple it is, it would probably be easier to make an "unloader" from scratch, rather than buy and adapt the F* track piece.

I think so too.
The Erz IIId wagons are probably the best construction, as the complete lower side panels open as the wagon passes by. The other wagons shown only open smaller hatches and are thereby more sensitive to what cargo you use.
