Here is an amazing SK 800 on Ebay...It looks to be the early 1950's version judging on the box (earlier was brown box). It is in absolutely amazing condition! Think a restore or repaint? There is not a scratch on it...I estimate it to go for around 900 Euro? Have a look! Thanks:

Hi,

yes the the text says it's repainted. Also the box is not genuine (repro).

The SK is a lovely model, sad that it's repainted though... 900 Euro is a bit (big bit) to much for a repaint.. My guess would rather be 350-400 Euro.

Remember with these old locos with the spoon type current collectors you need to use the solid 3 rail track to run. the stud track causes derailments and much grief.

Ahh... a repaint and repo box, that decreases the value....I was so shocked I didn't bother getting out the translator as I don't speak German. Ohh well there are plenty on ebay. Thanks!

KrokHunter,

I don't think you can get a good deal on the german ebay if you're thinking of getting it for resale as opposed to collecting it yourself. While the selection is unmatched, the german ebay plays out a perfect market. Things are priced at or over their value due to the large pool of buyers.

A good deal would be an item on the US ebay where the buyer does not ship outside the US. Marklin has relatively few followers in the US and collectibles tend to be cheaper. Also I have been able to get deals from sellers that accept only check but have good feedback since the check only thing scares many buyers. Of course selection is much narrower and the number of listings smaller, but we can't have it perfect.

Always run your google translator before bidding on ebay.de

This is not an original SK800 (4-6-2) - this is a conversion / rebuild/repaint likely by Ritter - the paint and inner workings are far too good to be even remotely original Marklin.

Yes, I know about the German Ebay sight...sometimes I just like to see if there is anything interesting...I am looking at an SK 800 right now on Ebay that is a very good deal in good condition. By the way I don't understand what you are saying about the conversion? Is this marklin or not? Thanks!

The next one you quoted is an original marklin - however you must beware - depending which year it is (version sub-number) - the motor mount (motorschild) made from die cast zinc alloy will have degraded - I have just repaired one of these with original, but later stable alloy parts - it's quite an operation but well worth it .... involves pulling gears and remounting on the shafts etc.

Which is to say that the seller may not even know that the engine is damaged as it is covered over by the loco housing - but the loco would not run (lights will come on however). Also the relay in the engine might need servicing - usually just a new spring - but often the original solder for the leads to the motor and the relay aren't 100% either and would have to be desoldered and resoldered with ,modern electronic solder.

Come to think of it - if you are looking for a runner and something to play with - the first eBay auction you quoted might be a better deal - if you just collect and let dust gather, without ever running then go with Auction 2 and don't restore / repair the engine.

Incidentally - never running a marklin engine does more harm then good - -should be run at least every 3 months for at least a half hour or so - regardless.

Old expensive Maerklin is not for the faint of heart - doesn't matter how much money you think you may have to throw at this stuff - sometimes the economics simply don't work - from a collection/investment point of view.
