Just went down and started the Big Boy - no sound. Anyone else had problems? Starting to wonder, the last three MFX Locos have had some kind of problem early. Starting to think life was much easier before sound and other functions with only the basic light function with Motorola decoders.

Hi Eric! I feel your pain! I had sound problems with my BR01 - 39010, my NYC Alco - 3761x, and my E10 - 39120. All were taken care of by my dealer - without any "groaning". I've had them back for some weeks now, run them almost daily, and so far so good.

My Big Boy - 37991 has been on my layout for months without any problems. The same with my VT08.5 Insider - 39080. You may have a point regarding increased complexity and reliability - but beautiful steamers like BB and the BR01 are so much more fun with sound. Especially with grandkids around. It is worth "some" hassle.

I continually hear of people having problems with sound and their MFX / Marklin locomotives. I have probably 75 80 engines, and have never had any problems with the sound functions. From my point of view, these must be very isolated issues.

With all these problems, perhap Marklin products are going the way of Mercedes quality went at least in the US. They are both produced in the BW area of Germany which ironically prides itself on workmanship and high quality.

For decades Mercedes were looked to as extremely reliable and high quality vehicle. Today its quality and repair ratings are consistently about the worst of all automobiles sold in the US. This is abundantly clear in independent consumer reports from actual consumers that own, drive and lease them.

I have yet to have a problem with any Lionel products, even the sophisticated high-tech Acela. Problems came first with Marklin. But, overall I like Marklin better.wink

Good luck with the Big Boy sound.

All true, Larry. My French brother-in-law got trouble by the numbers with his brand new
E-class Mercedes Benz. Aside from electronic and transmission breakdowns - it drew rust
only six months after taking delivery of it ... [xx(][xx(][xx(]

On the other hand, I buy Cadillac ever since 1980 - no single problem til today [^]
And with my DeVille's price tag just a third of a S500 - why should I ask for a headache wink

BTW, no trouble with my BigBoy, either ...

Building on what John stated:

Do Forum participants have a sense of a decline in Marklin quality?

Many of you have decades of experience with Marklin. While recent technologies are certainly more sophisticated, Marklin has implemented numerous technologies and innovations over its life.

Not so much as a sense of quality but quality control is not as good. I think as the product becomes more technical (MFX) the company has to spend more time on R/D. The compexity of micro design requires much more attention to the product. The physical product is as good as it always has been. It the electronics.
When all we cared about was a head light and smoke their wasn't much that could go wrong. I son't know who is supplying the boards since the split with ESU maybe M needs a tighter control.

When addressing M's new line of <u>US</u> locos definitely no - they all are just excellent [:p][:p][:p]
(owning one BB, one Mike, one GG-1, and five PA-1s so far)

Better still, my dealer picked 'em from the lot for the usual test before shipping -
all others 've been o.k., too Smile

Just got back from a business trip and tried the Big Boy. The sound worked. Too good to be true. It quit again after about three to five minutes. Guess I will open her up this weakend when I get a chance and see if its a loose wire(I doubt it).

Problem with mfx sound decoders is just a problem of Esu quality. And making faults in the production process.

And not using every time your sound. Sound decoders have only so many hours of live.

I just love the KISS principle.
I personally think a model train should have a motor and a relay/decoder, in a way you can maintain it yourself. If I read the problems with sound and the C-sinus engine it just underlines my opinion.
