Strange but after reading some of the posts on "BR50/Sound" my sound went on my BR50 (bought with Megapack within past 2 years)...kinda weird but true (bad karma?). Tonight sound acted normally upon startup using the mobile station but within a minute there was no sound, which is normally the case now.

I work long hours and travel a good bit so I'm not into creating my own Marklin repair shop but, as a first-timer with a loco problem, I was reading the posts on "BR50/sound" and I'm confused as to the various options and what is the best course of action:

1. Is it best to return to the dealer? What are the ramifications of that? What questions should I ask?

2. Should I send it to Marklin Germany and what do I send with it to show it was bought within the 2 year warranty (I'm assuming a 2 year warranty). I assume this is on the Marklin.de webpage? How should I send it? How many years will it take to get it back?

3. Do I try to replace the speaker by myself although with its sporadic operations upon start up makes me think it is more a faulty decoder issue, or am I mistaken?

Any advice would be appreciated. And, I loathe having to take any time to deal with this type of problem.

Larry

The one time my lok was sent to M* in Germany it took over five months to get it back. It failed again soon after getting it back (sound) and I then replaced the speaker with an ESU speaker myself. It has not failed since. I would go for trying to replace the speaker it is only two wires to solder. The cost of the speaker is less than the shipping cost to send to Ken at M* in the USA.

Regards

Hello Larry,

If You have still Warranty (2Years is the time You get ),You need Your receipt (copy) and a short discreption of Your problem and send it good packed up to :
Maerklin ,Inc. , 16988 West Victor Road, PO Box 510559, New Berlin, WI 53151-0559
Attn. Kenneth Brzenk,Service Manager.
I had a view bad pieces and all what I send in ,was promt ( not more then 10 days )
with new pieces replaced.
Good Luck!!

Hello Paul, Larry
it could be the decoder. One of my Alco from a Starter Set did the same.

Marklin are aware of this problem. If your dealer is local ask him to fit a new speaker, if not try an email to Marklin asking them to send you a new speaker which you can fit yourself. This way the cost to you is nothing.
If the above takes too long then as suggested just buy a new speaker and fit it to the loco but still get a free one from M which you can keep as a spare.

Definitely work with your dealer. I had a recent problem with the Superman lok in the Superman set (the lights didn't work) I sent it back the the Lok Shop about two weeks ago. I just got notice this morning that it tis on it's way back to me already.

Hello All,
When I had problems, I would of course first contact my dealer. Then the advice from the dealer was to send it to Maerklin. I do not like to spend shipping costs,
But this is how it goes.
David, I do not think that any corporation just send You a new part. They want the old one back, can You image how many people ( not the people here in the forum ), would pull a bad one. Our world is not that nice anymore !!

Hoping for peace and a better world,

Thanks very much for all your great advice! I appreciate it very much and I will contact the dealer tomorrow. Now I know the possible ramifications of the alternatives which is exactly what I was seeking.

Ray. I understand your point but I feel in this case M would send a speaker without the need for the loco or old speaker being returned. If sending them an email you could send the receipt for the loco as an attachment. The case of BR 50 sound is well known to them. Mine is now three years old and still no problems...same with MS but I appear to be in the minority.

David: I have two MS's one about three years old and the other about two. Have had no problems with them, either. I think they just had a bad batch. One of mine was in a starter set and the other I bought separately. As with most things, the problems are amplified because that is what gets peoples attention.

Ron Good to hear somebody else has had no problems with the MS. It gives good value with a start set but is very limited other than just the control of the locos. The BR 50 with the start set is a nice loco and it is a shame that it has been spoilt by the sound problems. The V 160 which was also included with the start set has proved to be excellent with good sound and although plastic looks good on the layout.
Larry let us know how you get on.
