Hello,

I'm a relative newbie regarding advanced Marklin topics, but am trying to learn. Regarding the recent thread about problems with Ma 39572, I decided to not look at purchasing it but rather convert a red 3658 I have at hand to a newer digital format.

What decoder would you recommend for 3658? Would I need a motor as well? Is it a worthwile upgrade or should I just keep the old 6080 decoder which I think is originally in the loco? Is mfx vs 6090x a worthwile consideration? (I try to keep it budget) Any links on how such an upgrade can be done?

Thanks for the input.

It looks like the motor is a DCM. Then the 60760 set is a perfect budget choice, since motor parts are included.

Another point to consider is if you want to keep the loco standard to maintain the collector value. But I think that is not necessarily needed in this case.
