Uhlenbrock has announced a cheaper version of the Intellibox to be released this year. The price tag will be around 300€, a bit lower than the competition.

Compared to the fully featured Intellibox IR, there are less functions and connections for other devices (like 6021, LokMaus). There is no computer interface or s88 feedback connection. However, the basic functions of the Intellibox are still available, and at a nice price. With full support for the LocoNet bus it will still be possible to connect almost anything you can imagine.

The target group for this new Intellibox will probably be the new-beginners who don't have any previous equipment to hook up to the IB and are not planning to use computer control. Or maybe 6021-users who want to expand through LocoNet and get more automated functions.

Seems like a step backward to me. In this age of increased functionality and ease of use, to pare down a device using old technology rather than bringing out a cutting edge product doesn't look good for them. Maybe there will be a surprise announcement at Nurnberg. I hope so.

I agree that they may have cut too many corners on this one. The lack of a computer interface is a big mistake in my opinion. It means you can't control the layout from a computer - but also that you can't upgrade the software without an external interface. I have been playing with the thought of integrating my old 6021 in a LocoNet environment, but adding the price tag of an interface to that of an Intellibox makes it an unattractive solution.

You make sense Ron, but also I would say there is a large market who want a good solid/reliable/easy-to-use controller with two controls to manage the majority of things and get it at a good price. Many "middle of the road" model railroaders are not interested in the PC connectivity, S88 etc,

lets also hope for a new announcemet at Nurnberg

True, Tony. They will fill a market niche that way, but are missing the train in the new wave unless they have a new product to announce.

I think it will just be an in-between thing. To boost sales a little while continuing working on a completely new system. Or at least controller... I don't expect that new thing to be announced at Nurnberg this year, but if it happens, I'll let you all know.

IB Basic features compared to IB Classic:
LocoNet +
I2C Märklin connector -
LocoNet Booster output +
Märklin Booster output +
DCC Booster output-
LokMaus -
Infrared -
s88 -
RS 232 -
Selectrix -
Memory -

This is like we speculated in another thread.
The lack of an I2C (Märklin) interface makes it useless for 6021 owners.
Also, for beginners who plan to use S88 any time in the future, this option isn't too atttractive either.
Although one could add Loconet train detection units and an IB Switch with built-in memory to upgrade to a full Loconet-driven system, without S88 wiring.

To use computer control, one could add a Loconet-to-RS232/USB interface later (AFAIK, only a few software programs support Loconet code).
I'm not suggesting that this is an economic way to go, but for beginners who plan to expand later, there are some options left.

I dunno.... The IB is getting old now and the biggest reason why I still have one is that it is the best (and nearly the only) way to have computer control on the layout.. The CS (based on my visits to Nev's place) romps home in terms of its ability to manage the loco fleet - the IB's little screen and strange ways to set loco/signal addresses are now too tedious.. Take computer control away and you are left with something inflexible..

The good thing is that this make LocoNet more modular, but still more had been wanted for me. I'd suggest a separate programmer, and no fixed throttle. When there is such a superb bus available, I wan't to equip it with my own choice of modules. It would also make it cheaper to change to a colour screen throttle (or the track control bord), a new booster when/if mfx gets available or the booster is burnt, etc. It's a pity it seems that Daisy is discontinued (in the price list); I like Daisy very much.

Lars,
Agreed. Daisy with IB-Switch (and Loconet train detection, or Lissy if you will) makes a great little system.
I would love to see a separate bidirectional LocoNet-CanBus converter, a Loconet USB interface (with standard IB protocol), a separate Loconet keyboard with color screen, etcetera.

Actually the IB Basic seems like a replacement for Daisy. The features are more or less the same. Of course IB has a built-in booster and two separate throttles, but it seems like Uhlenbrock have plans to make IB Basic their low-end system and replace the Intellibox IR with a new full-featured system. Perhaps when the dust settles about mfx & bi-directional DCC etc.

Yes, fully agree,
with one important advantage (at least I think): IB Basic is usable to configure the advanced LocoNet units, where I think Uhlenbrock now has it's strength. I was hoping this should be done using Daisy and the new LocoNet-interface, but this idea isn't that bad.

Differences:
Daisy system cannot program LNCV devices, nor actively cooperate with Lissy
Daisy has less power as said
Daisy is much more convenient to handle
Dasiy has a smart analog mode, usable for 2R railers
Daisy system is more "modular"; it's parts may be used as throttle+booster.
Daisy cannot read CVs from decoders, and has no separate PT.

One of the main benefits with the IB is that it's software may be upgraded through the computer port. I wonder how Uhlenbrock are thinking about this; maybe they don't like it becuase it's hard for them to earn money? Or they will find another solution?

News from Nürnberg today (via Stummi's forum):
Fleischmann will introduce a LocoNet decoder for the turntable, which is also compatible with Mä 7286.
The bad news: Eur 179.50 [:(].
The good news: another LocoNet supporter [^]

Personally I think that this is a good replacement for the Intellibox for starter sets. Many Piko and Fleischmann starter sets have an Intellibox included. For a serious Marklin user, I think the Intellibox basic is too limited and too expensive. This should sell for no more than 125 Euros.

Just my thoughts...

As someone looking to upgrade controllers in the future from my 6021, I would not be interested in the IB basic. I'm still hoping for something 'bigger' from Uhlenbrock before the toy show is over.

I detect a relationship between Viessman and Uhlenbrock (see Digital2 decoders capable of DCC/Motorola)

If Uhlenbrock have some partnership that extends to some involvement with the Commander, they may just be waiting for M to finally settles on their Systems specs. Then they would leverage this rather than bring out a totally different product.

The IB-Basic would indeed be just an entry unit (pricepoint/simple but functionalal). In which case it should (if future proofed) be able to operate as an additioanl controller if/when the user was to upgrade to a more powerful system.

For me not word buying it at 300 euro. For 250 euro you can find a good second hand IB classic. For 60 euro you have a Marklin Mobil station with 60 VA output.

Me too. I have been patiently waiting for M to update the CS ( actually to make it right), but instead there is nothing but a food fight at Marklin. Then the new IB is just vanilla without any syrup added. Surely someone will do something.

In the meantime my old 6021's are getting greyer as the day
