My Märklin mobile crane 46715 arrived this week. As reported by others, it is on the noisy side and somewhat faster than it could have been, but overall its a nice model. Since trying to operate it by selecting different functions and getting the motor direction is not very friendly, so I created a control screen in my software - and it provides a much easier method of controlling the crane....

I have added the crane control to my BW Lite software too so if you have an Intellibox connected to a Windows PC you too can control it from your PC keyboard!

Screenshots, details etc. are at:
http://layout.mixmox.com/1/mobile_crane
and the software is at http://bw.mixmox.com

Does it have joystick support? That would be nice :)

Not at present. I always wanted joystick control too and in fact I once implemented it for my other rotary crane.

The problem with this crane is that the model can only run one axis at a time, so the advantage of being able to drive multiple axis with a joystick is lost..

I'm sorry to go a bit off-topic here, but do You (or anyone else) know more regarding controlling the actual piezo-motors?
I am tempted towards attempting to make a replacement decoder for this crane in order to make it move slower, as well as being able to control all motors simultaneously (for the joystick feature). I have been thinking of this ever since I got the crane, but I haven't done anything about it just yet.

sadly I don't know more. I suspect you would need to take yours apart and then look up the specs on the parts you uncover. Good luck !

That's allright. After a hint somewhere else, I found this page:
http://www.elliptec.com/

The piezo-motors seem to be quite easy to control. Just apply a certain frequency to them, and they move one way. Another frequency, and they move the other way. That'll be fun to experiment with.
