I am in the process of converting a couple of engines to have SB-Faulhaber motors.
Conversion is successful but the problem is a slight buzzing sound from the Marklin 60905 decoder.
This buzzing sound is present with no motor attached ie just power up from track with the red and brown wires.
I have tried with and without the noise supression chokes soldered onto the motor connection wires blue and green but no difference.
I thought it may be a faulty decoder eg cold solder joint but the same noise has come from 3 separate 60905 decoders.
If I plug a 60902 decoder onto the motor there is no noise.
I did also try the ESU lokV2 and V3 and ESU MFX but the old alzeimers problem was just slightly present which is more annoying than the buzzing sound.
Other than this slight noise the engines run ultra smoothly.Smile
Any ideas or would be appreciated.

Hi diesel,

I have noticed on some (but not all) of the decoders in my locos some very low buzzing noise, too. Usually not to be heard as the noise from the motor is stronger. I think this does not necessarily indicate that there is a problem. The motor regulation of the decoders works with rather high frequency, and I suppose the sound is caused by some capacitiors (or whatever) on the PCB. You can also find such noise in a TV set or a light dimmer.

In order to get complete clarity, you could simply connect a small DC motor to the green and blue decoder wires. If no can motor available, a simple DC toy motor should do as well for testing whether e.g. the load regulation works correctly.

Hi Hans
Yes the noise is similiar to light dimmer and is only noticeable when the engine is stationary.
The SB Faulhaber motor is completely silent and just the movement of the gears and wheels does block out the decoder sound.
Its interesting also that if a little pressure is applied to the plastic casing of the decoders the noise is reduced.
I just found it unusual that only the 60905 would make this noise and all my 60902's are silent when resting.
Otherwise the performance of my locos ie load regulation slow speed running and no alzeimers is just fantastic with this type of conversion.

Your 60905 is not the only one - I have an Uhlenbrock 76320 which makes a slight buzzing noise, but only when you turn the controller from zero. So the noise can still be heard at low speeds, but once I go past 50 or so, the motor/gear noise is louder.

Please tell us more about the SB faulhaber motor conversion. Is this a drop-in replacement motor? What is the cost involved?
Kind regards,

I have installed SB motors in several old Liliput (Wien) Loks.
All of them work perfectly, eliminating the problems of the original motor-transmission.
The Loks I've modified so far are BR05, BR12 and BR45.
Installation of the SB kit implies some abilities for milling, not very difficult, at least for these Liliputs.
Before start, you should take into account that there is no backout and any mistake will render a ruined Lok. There are no spare tenders available.
Be careful when selecting the decoder: only high-frequency decoders must be used with coreless motors.
Low freq decoders will burn the coreless motor out.
I've installed Lokpilots in my SB Loks.

You need to upload the photss to the Forum. We cannot read them from your computer.
In the Forum Topics uner Site Specific Stuff theree is a ost on how to upload Photos.

After uploading (Taking not of the Location) use the Yelloe Envelope Icon and have the Format Mode to Help and paste the address.
Hope that helps.

Diesel,
Reason this one failed was that there was an Enter before the last "bracket /img bracket]"
AS above If I take the enter out the picture will mysteriously appear.

Pleased to be of assistance.

Thanks, diesel, for the photos and explanation. It looks like a tricky operation, but I'm sure the result is great. [8)]
Is there a way to adjust the position of the motor or is that all down to VERY PRECISE milling of the motor mount?

I might try that one day, but for now I'll just continue converting my old locs to digital using the 5* method (5 more to go)Smile.
Kind regards,
Pieter-Jan

Yes thanks for the assistance BUT how do you know that
"There was an Enter before the last "bracket /img bracket]"
all I see on my page is red X in a square box.

Pianne,
With all the conversions I have done to date, the motor is designed to sit on the mounting block which sits on a flat surface of the original engine chasis. Some need more milling than others but Sb- Faulhaber supply good instructions and pictures.
Once you have the block in place you simply position the motor on top of the block and glue it on making sure the gears are lined up as per the picture in the instructions There is definitely a small area of movement available.
The instructions are in German and my German is extremly poor ie almost non existent.
I have relied on the pictures which also have diagrams showing measurements for cutting.
I usually dissasemble the loco and just simply sitting down and think it out over a few days before I do any cutting.
These days with the internet you can contact SB-Faulhber and they help translate the instructions for you and some actually come in English.
I did my first three conversions 10 years ago because there were no conversionn kits for those locos - just the basic 6090. Now I am converting locos that have already been converted into 5 pole but I am not happy with their performance in regard to slow speed running smoothness and quietness. Some are definitely OK and do not need converting.

regards

unfortunately I cannot see any text when the picture does not show - just the square and red X. My web browser must be set up differently.
I feel that I have worked out how to insert the pictures consistently and can check using another computor which is also connected to the net but not networked to this one. I have also written a few notes to refer back to in future.

Hey Nev
That is great. Now I can see the original text and the differences in the photo locations that I used. I did not realize I could edit a message once I had posted it.
Computors never cease to amaze me.
Thanks again and I am now converting my old e191. A little tricky but I feel it is much easier than computor logic.
