I am planning to travel to Vienna for Christmas.
Any suggestions on good dealers Maerklin or ROCO in the Austrian Capital?
Also suggestions where to stay (hotels in the range of 60 to 100 Euro) and what to visit?

Spielwaren Carl Hilpert KG stock Märklin, but I'm not sure how cheap they are.

Hotel Fürstenhof is friendly, and very close to the Westbahnhof.

Schönbrunn Palace is fabulous -- allocate a whole day!

Vienna, if I remember correctly, is the only city in the
world where you can't just ... waltz in and ask for a cup of coffe -
you must be very specific which coffee you want.
I have nice memories of Einspanner coffee - strong expresso with
cream injected in under pressure. This will keep you warm and alert
in your search for M* dealersSmile

Thank you very much for the info. As a matter of fact I did a quite extensive tour of most of the Modellbahnshops in the area of Vienna (mainly near the Centre and at the west side of the City). I think that Hilpert was the best in terms of knowledgeability and also variety. I turned out spending 350Euro for buying there a modified Maerklin Hercules (OBB1016). He has done a wonderful job putting in a sound decoder and also adjusting for the red-white LED change. It is a beauty!
All other dealers looked a bit outdated and I must admit that I was a bit dissappointed by the almost decadance condition I witnessed in most of the shops. It seems that our hobby is diminishing and I don't like that! Imagine that there was a dealer somewhere in the Center of Vienna (Marxer Str.) that is opening only between 15.00-17.45 only Monday to Friday!!!

The shop where I buy märklin in Vienna is http://www.tina-modelleisenbahn.at/ It is in the 10. District but has better prices than the shops in the centre and it's a modelltrainshop and no toyshop.

Hi Symeon,

The recommendation for Spielwaren Carl Hilpert KG was rather old!
We visited Vienna in 2001 as part of a long holiday. I had not rejoined MRR then, but just remembered "Märklin" and wanted to buy some stuff ... anything, really.
I ended up buying a BR18.4 Delta (33184) and a pair of CFL passenger wagons, on special.

I will stand by the recommendation for Hotel Fürstenhof, since he does breakfast until noon (or so), which suited us fine, since we were coming from Western Europe, and had only a few days to get into the local time zone...
